Bitvo vs. Kraken: What Works Better For Canadians in 2024

Oleg Galeev

Last updated December 27, 2023

WonderFi and Bitbuy, its parent company, took over all Bitvo client accounts in 2023. This means Bitvo is now part of Bitbuy and isn't taking new sign-ups. Bitvo and Kraken are two prominent cryptocurrency exchanges that provide platforms for buying, selling, and trading cryptocurrencies. While both offer a variety of cryptocurrencies and features, there are noticeable differences in their fee structures, accessibility in regions like Ontario, Canada, and the services offered.

Description

Bitvo was a Calgary-based cryptocurrency exchange, founded in 2018, known for its Same Day Guarantee, zero trading fees and 24/7 phone support. Bitvo no longer exists: in November 2023, its client accounts were acquired by Bitbuy and migrated into the WonderFi ecosystem, and the Bitvo platform was wound down. It's also remembered as the exchange FTX almost bought, a deal terminated days after FTX's collapse in November 2022, narrowly sparing Bitvo's customers.

Kraken is a Canada-friendly, US-based crypto exchange operating since 2013 and one of the most trusted names in the industry. In April 2025 it became a registered restricted dealer in Canada, valid in every province and territory, and it has grown its Canadian business past $2 billion in client assets. Kraken has a strong reputation for security and compliance and offers a wide range of coins, with CAD trading pairs that spare Canadians foreign exchange fees.

Coins

No longer applicable. Before closing, Bitvo offered a small selection including Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, Litecoin, Cardano and QCAD, Canada's first mass-market stablecoin.

200+ available to Canadians, with dedicated CAD trading pairs on majors.

Fees

No longer applicable. Historically: free deposits, zero trading fees (revenue came from the spread), and a 1% withdrawal fee with a $15 minimum.

  • Free CAD deposits via Interac e-Transfer
  • Instant Buy incurs roughly a 1.5% fee (lower for stablecoins) plus a payment method fee if using a card
  • Kraken Pro uses maker/taker pricing starting around 0.25%/0.40% and dropping with 30-day volume, among the cheapest ways for Canadians to trade

Pros

None currently, since the platform is closed. In its day: no trading fees, the Same Day Guarantee, the Bitvo Cash Card, and rare 24/7 phone support.

  • Registered restricted dealer across all of Canada since April 2025
  • Free Interac e-Transfer deposits
  • CAD trading pairs, no FX fees on majors
  • Wide range of coins
  • Good for beginners via Instant Buy, with pro-grade tools on Kraken Pro
  • Staking available
  • Never hacked in over a decade of operation

Cons

  • Platform wound down in November 2023 with client accounts sold to Bitbuy
  • High spreads masked the "zero fee" pitch
  • Small coin selection even at its peak
  • Instant Buy fees are high, so use Kraken Pro for anything beyond small purchases
  • Client assets are not covered by the Canadian Investor Protection Fund, a condition every user must acknowledge
  • Customer support can be slow at peak times

Account Limits

No longer applicable.

Standard restricted dealer conditions apply: unlimited buying of majors like BTC and ETH everywhere, with an annual net purchase limit on certain altcoins for residents outside Ontario, BC, Alberta and Quebec. Deposit limits depend on verification level.

Methods to buy

There is no way to buy crypto through Bitvo. Former clients were migrated to Bitbuy, which is now part of Robinhood's Canadian operation following the WonderFi acquisition. If a site claiming to be Bitvo accepts deposits today, treat it as an impostor. For current options, see our best crypto exchanges in Canada.

  • Interac e-Transfer (free)
  • Wire transfer
  • Debit/credit card

Security

Bitvo's exit was orderly and its record clean. It was a CSA-registered restricted dealer that operated on a full reserve basis, meaning it never lent customer funds, and held client assets with third-party custodians BitGo, with over 80% in cold storage. No customer funds were lost in the wind-down, and its refusal to close the FTX deal after the collapse protected its clients from being dragged into the largest fraud in crypto history.

  • Roughly 95% of coins held in cold storage
  • Servers under 24/7 physical surveillance
  • 2FA, withdrawal email confirmations and account timeout
  • Regular Proof of Reserves audits
  • Never suffered a platform hack since 2013

Mobile and Desktop Trading

Bitvo provides a fully optimized trading platform for both mobile and desktop users, with a  3,0-star rating on the App Store. On the other hand, Kraken offers two mobile applications: Kraken and Kraken Pro. Both applications are highly rated with Kraken scoring a 4.2-star rating on Google Play and a 4.7-star rating on the App Store, and Kraken Pro equally high. For desktop users, both exchanges offer user-friendly interfaces equipped with advanced charting tools and order types.

Bitvo

Bitvo's website and apps are no longer operational. The brand's social channels have gone quiet, and account access questions now route through Bitbuy.

Kraken

Kraken's app is well designed for both beginners and experienced traders. The Instant Buy option lets users purchase crypto in seconds with a card or fiat balance, convenient but pricey. Kraken Pro carries far more reasonable maker/taker fees with advanced charting, more order types and deeper tools, at the cost of a steeper learning curve. Our advice: fund with free Interac e-Transfer, then trade on Pro.

Security Compliance

Bitvo's exit was orderly and its record clean. It was a CSA-registered restricted dealer that operated on a full reserve basis, meaning it never lent customer funds, and held client assets with third-party custodians BitGo, with over 80% in cold storage. No customer funds were lost in the wind-down, and its refusal to close the FTX deal after the collapse protected its clients from being dragged into the largest fraud in crypto history.

Kraken keeps about 95% of user funds in cold storage, encrypts all account information, and physically secures its servers under constant surveillance. It has never been hacked since launching in 2013, one of the cleanest security records of any major exchange. Users can enable two-factor authentication, receive email notifications for every withdrawal, and benefit from account timeout protection. Kraken also publishes regular Proof of Reserves audits demonstrating customer funds are fully held.

Bitvo ensures the safety of its users' assets by keeping the majority of them offline in cold storage, similar to Kraken, which keeps over 95% of digital assets in cold storage. Bitvo's additional layer of security includes a 2FA feature, and all withdrawals are manually reviewed and approved. Kraken also offers a two-factor authentication, email notifications for any withdrawals, an account timeout, and an account lock feature.

Regulatory Compliance

Bitvo was registered with FINTRAC and as a restricted dealer with Canadian securities regulators, and that registration shaped its ending: rather than collapsing, its client accounts were transferred to another registered platform under regulatory oversight. Its successor chain: Bitvo clients to Bitbuy (November 2023), Bitbuy's parent WonderFi to Robinhood (2025). Former Bitvo customers with account questions should contact Bitbuy support.

Kraken is one of the most compliant exchanges available to Canadians. It completed the CSA's rigorous pre-registration undertaking process and obtained restricted dealer registration in April 2025, recognized nationally, while it works toward full investment dealer registration and CIRO membership. In the US, the SEC's lawsuit against Kraken was dismissed in early 2025, clearing its regulatory slate as the company prepares for a public listing. Canadians can use the platform with confidence, with one caveat: as a restricted dealer, its client assets aren't covered by CIPF insurance.

Bitvo is fully compliant with Canadian federal laws, registered as a Money Services Business (MSB) with FINTRAC, and is regulated as per the standards set by FINTRAC and AMF. Meanwhile, Kraken also operates legally, but it is important to note that not all services are available in Ontario due to the Ontario Securities Commission regulations.

Customer support

There is no Bitvo support team anymore. Former customers should reach out to Bitbuy, which assumed servicing of migrated accounts. If anyone contacts you offering to recover Bitvo funds for a fee, treat it as a recovery scam.

Kraken offers 24/7 live chat and email support plus an extensive learning centre with helpful articles and guides. Support quality has historically been a sore point, with tickets sometimes taking a long time to resolve, though the live chat handles routine issues reasonably quickly.

Bitvo provides 24/7 customer support through phone, email, and live chat, with a dedicated Bitvo Cash Card for users to access their cash or cryptocurrencies instantly. Kraken, on the other hand, offers 24/7 live chat and email support, along with phone support for the USA, UK, and the European Union.

Conclusion

Both Bitvo and Kraken are formidable cryptocurrency exchanges that offer unique features, a variety of cryptocurrencies, and robust security measures. However, considering the no-fee instant withdrawal feature, the live customer support, and Bitvo Cash Card, Bitvo appears to offer more streamlined and user-friendly services, especially for Canadian users. Therefore, Bitvo emerges as the winner in this comparison.
