VirgoCX vs. Gate.io: What Works Better For Canadians in 2026

Oleg Galeev

Last updated July 8, 2026

VirgoCX and Gate.io are both popular platforms offering users a range of options to trade cryptocurrencies. From a Canadian perspective, though, the comparison is one-sided: Gate (rebranded to Gate.com in May 2025) has listed Canada as a restricted jurisdiction since April 2022, while VirgoCX remains fully operational for Canadians and underwent a significant transformation in April 2025, pivoting to a non-custodial model where your crypto goes straight to your own wallet.

Description

VirgoCX is a Toronto-based platform that offers Canadians an easy way to trade crypto. In April 2025 it became a non-custodial platform, meaning your crypto goes to your own wallet rather than sitting on the exchange. It also offers VirgoCX Wealth, an OTC service for trading large amounts of crypto, plus foreign currency exchange if you wish to convert your fiat.

Launched in 2013, Gate (formerly Gate.io, rebranded and moved to Gate.com in May 2025) is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, ranking among the top exchanges by spot trading volume. However, Canada is on the list of restricted locations in the Gate user agreement, alongside 30+ other jurisdictions. Gate closed all Canadian accounts back in April 2022 and has not returned, so we WOULD NOT recommend trying to use it. Coins

VirgoCX offers Canadians the ability to trade over 90 cryptocurrencies, including BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL and USDC.

3,500+

Fees

  • Zero trading commissions
  • Free CAD deposits
  • Spreads of 0.95% on BTC and ETH, and 1.6% on other assets, with tiered discounts based on 30-day trading volume
  • Withdrawal fees may apply depending on the method
  • Free crypto deposits
  • Various crypto withdrawal fees depending on the network
  • Spot trading fees up to 0.1% per side, lower with volume
  • Additional discounts for holding GateToken (GT)
  • Derivatives fees around 0.075%
  • Various third-party fees for card payments

Pros

  • Non-custodial since April 2025, so your crypto goes straight to your own wallet
  • Zero trading commissions
  • Free CAD deposits and Interac e-Transfer available
  • OTC desk via VirgoCX Wealth
  • Registered with FINTRAC and on the CSA's list of platforms authorized to do business with Canadians
  • USD and CAD accepted
  • TradingView-based trading terminal
  • Quick Trade available
  • Thousands of altcoins available to trade
  • Advanced trading features and tools
  • Low trading fees
  • Additional benefits for holding GateToken
  • Monthly Proof of Reserves with roughly 125% coverage
  • Licensed entities in the EU (MiCA via Malta), Dubai, Japan and the US

Cons

  • You must set up and manage your own wallet before trading, which adds a step for beginners
  • Spreads are higher than some competitors, especially on altcoins
  • No crypto insurance, since the platform no longer holds customer assets
  • Not allowed in Canada, and no Canadian entity exists despite its licensing push elsewhere
  • Mandatory KYC means Canadians cannot sign up at all, and VPN workarounds risk frozen funds
  • CAD was never supported
  • Not beginner-friendly
  • History of security incidents, including a major hack in its early years as Bter
  • Mixed app reviews

Account Limits

  • Interac e-Transfer deposits are capped per day (historically $10,000, confirm the current figure in your dashboard before publishing)

n/a for Canadians, since accounts cannot be opened from Canada. Elsewhere, withdrawal limits depend on KYC level.

Methods to buy

  • Interac e-Transfer
  • Wire Transfer

Canadians cannot buy crypto on Gate. Account creation requires KYC, and restrictions are enforced based on the country on your ID, so even a VPN won't get you a working account, just one that can be frozen with your funds inside. Security

  • Non-custodial model: VirgoCX never holds your crypto, which removes exchange-hack risk for your coins entirely
  • 2FA, SSL encryption and ongoing monitoring for suspicious activity
  • Fiat held with Canadian banking partners
  • FINTRAC registered (MSB M19955733) and PIPEDA compliant
  • Hot and cold storage with multi-signature protocols
  • 2FA
  • Monthly Proof of Reserves showing reserves of roughly $9.5 billion at 125% coverage

Mobile and Desktop Trading

VirgoCX has a user-friendly interface with a seamless experience across its web and mobile platforms, highly rated on the App Store and Google Play. Gate's mobile apps have historically drawn poor reviews, with complaints about login issues, 2FA problems and a confusing interface, though the platform was redesigned with the May 2025 rebrand from Gate.io to Gate.com. Either way, Gate's app is irrelevant for Canadians since accounts cannot be opened from Canada.

VirgoCX

VirgoCX has a mobile app for both iPhone and Android, functionally identical to the browser platform, with a TradingView-based terminal, charts, indicators and order books. Since the platform is now non-custodial, you'll connect your own wallet as part of setup — a one-time step before you can place your first order.

Security Compliance

Since April 2025, VirgoCX operates as a non-custodial platform, meaning it never holds your crypto. The coins you buy are delivered to your own wallet, so there is no pool of customer funds on the exchange for hackers to steal. This replaces the old model, where assets were held in cold storage with third-party custody and covered by crime insurance. The new approach is actually closer to what we always recommend anyway: holding your own coins in your own Canadian crypto wallet. Fiat balances are held with Canadian banking partners.

Gate has invested heavily in security in recent years, publishing monthly Proof of Reserves with coverage around 125% and holding licenses in Malta (MiCA), Dubai, Japan and elsewhere. That said, its track record includes past security incidents, and none of its licensing footprint extends to Canada. Since KYC is mandatory and tied to your ID country, Canadians who slip through via VPN risk having accounts frozen with funds inside.

Since KYC is mandatory and tied to your ID country, Canadians who try to slip through via VPN risk having accounts frozen with funds inside.

VirgoCX protects users through its non-custodial model — it never holds customer crypto, eliminating exchange-hack risk for coins entirely — along with 2FA, SSL encryption and ongoing activity monitoring. Gate uses hot and cold storage with multi-signature protocols and publishes monthly Proof of Reserves, but none of that is accessible to Canadians.

Regulatory Compliance

VirgoCX is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business (MSB M19955733) and appears on the Canadian Securities Administrators' list of crypto platforms authorized to do business with Canadians, so it is fully legal in Canada. It originally registered as a restricted securities dealer in 2022 but did not complete CIRO investment dealer registration, which is why it pivoted to the non-custodial model in April 2025.

Gate is not a compliant crypto exchange in Canada. Canada sits on its restricted locations list, Canadian accounts were closed in April 2022, and while Gate has since obtained licenses in the EU, Dubai, Japan and even launched a US entity in 2025, it has shown no sign of registering with Canadian regulators.

VirgoCX is a registered MSB with FINTRAC and is on the CSA's authorized list — fully legal for Canadians to use. Gate lists Canada as a disallowed country and has held no Canadian regulatory registration since closing Canadian accounts in April 2022.

Customer support

If you need help, you can contact VirgoCX's support team via email or live chat, and they offer multi-language support. Not many exchanges offer live chat.

Gate offers a help centre, blog and live chat for users in supported countries. Reviews remain mixed, with recurring complaints on Trustpilot about slow support and withdrawal difficulties. For Canadians this is academic, since the platform is off-limits entirely.

VirgoCX's live chat is a clear advantage for any Canadian who needs real-time help. Gate's support is irrelevant to Canadians who cannot access the platform.

Conclusion

From a Canadian perspective, this comparison has only one answer. Gate has listed Canada as a restricted jurisdiction since April 2022 and is simply not available — the May 2025 rebrand to Gate.com changed nothing, and KYC enforcement means even VPN workarounds result in accounts that can be frozen with funds inside.

VirgoCX is the clear choice. It is fully legal, FINTRAC registered and on the CSA's authorized list. Its April 2025 pivot to a non-custodial model means your crypto is never sitting on the exchange — it goes straight to your own wallet. With zero trading commissions, over 90 cryptocurrencies, free CAD deposits, a TradingView-based terminal, live chat support, and an OTC desk via VirgoCX Wealth, it is a solid all-round option for Canadian crypto traders. The main adjustment is setting up your own wallet before you can trade, which adds one step for beginners.
