Coinsquare, one of Canada’s leading digital cryptocurrency trading platforms, has appointed Martin Piszel as its new CEO. He will also be joining the Board of Directors and will succeed Stacey Hoisak who will then assume her role as the President and Chief Legal Officer.
Piszel is an accomplished executive with 25 years of experience in the electronic trading industry and capital market sector. He has co-founded Alpha ATS and has recently worked at Tradelogiq Markets Inc. as the Head of Corporate Development.
“Coinsquare is entering a new phase in its development and growth as we move ever closer to regulation and to strengthening our position as Canada’s leading digital asset trading platform,” said the chairman of Coinsquare’s board, Jason Theofilos.
Before moving forward to Tradelogiq, Piszel was the Head and Managing Director of the Alternative Execution and Prime Brokerage at the CIBC World Markets and he was also a member of the Bank’s Equities Management Committee. He also served as the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at E*Trade Canada.
The hiring came to a conclusion one year after Coinsquare made a settlement with the Ontario Securities Commission over allegations that in order to inflate its trading volume, it engaged in wash trading and striked back against a whistleblower who attempted to disclose this misconduct.
Due to this mishap, Coinsquare had to turn around its corporate governance, establish an independent board, and now appoint a new Chief Executive Officer and Chief Compliance Officer.
Cole Diamond and Virgile Rostand, then-CEO and then-president, respectively, stepped down simultaneously and were banned from having any more connections with Coinsquare for three years. Felix Mazer, Coinsquare’s then-Chief Compliance Officer, was also banned for one year.
“I am excited to join Coinsquare and its talented team. My extensive capital markets experience will help accelerate Coinsquare’s ongoing goal towards being a fully regulated entity and strengthen its market position as Canada’s most trusted digital asset exchange. Canadian digital currency adoption still has a long way to go and Coinsquare is well-positioned to lead and educate Canadians on this emerging asset class.” said Martin Piszel.
