BitMEX vs. Gate.io: What Works Better For Canadians in 2026

Oleg Galeev

Last updated July 6, 2026

BitMEX and Gate.io are two prominent cryptocurrency exchanges with distinct offerings. BitMEX, a cryptocurrency derivatives trading platform, is well-known for its advanced features and high liquidity, especially for Bitcoin. Gate (rebranded to Gate.com in May 2025), established in 2013, has a comprehensive range of altcoins and significant daily trading volume. For Canadians, however, the comparison is largely academic: neither platform is available in Canada, and neither shows any sign of returning.

Description

BitMEX is a veteran crypto derivatives exchange offering futures and perpetual contracts with up to 100x leverage. You cannot deposit fiat on BitMEX, only crypto, and the exchange is aimed at experienced traders. Unfortunately, BitMEX no longer serves Canadians: Canada is listed as a restricted jurisdiction in BitMEX's own policy, a restriction that took effect in late 2023.

Launched in 2013, Gate (formerly Gate.io, rebranded and moved to Gate.com in May 2025) is one of the largest cryptocurrency exchanges in the world, ranking among the top exchanges by spot trading volume. However, Canada is on the list of restricted locations in the Gate user agreement, alongside 30+ other jurisdictions. Gate closed all Canadian accounts back in April 2022 and has not returned, so we WOULD NOT recommend trying to use it. Cons

  • Not available in Canada since 2023

  • Not suitable for simply buying crypto, no fiat deposits
  • Only suitable for traders who understand contracts trading
  • Checkered regulatory history in the US
  • Not allowed in Canada, and no Canadian entity exists despite its licensing push elsewhere
  • Mandatory KYC means Canadians cannot sign up at all, and VPN workarounds risk frozen funds
  • CAD was never supported

  • Mixed app reviews

Methods to buy

Canadians cannot use BitMEX. In supported countries, funding is crypto-only (BTC, USDT and other supported assets), with no fiat rails. For leverage-style products available to Canadians, see our list of the best crypto exchanges in Canada.

Canadians cannot buy crypto on Gate. Account creation requires KYC, and restrictions are enforced based on the country on your ID, so even a VPN won't get you a working account, just one that can be frozen with your funds inside. Security

  • All BTC held in cold storage
  • Multi-signature wallets
  • Withdrawals audited by hand by BitMEX employees

  • Monthly Proof of Reserves showing reserves of roughly $9.5 billion at 125% coverage

Mobile and Desktop Trading

BitMEX offers a comprehensive trading platform on both desktop and mobile. Its application, though complex for beginners, is a full-feature trading platform that mirrors its desktop counterpart. On the other hand, Gate.io's mobile application has received low ratings on both the App Store and Google Play due to issues like login problems, 2FA difficulties, and a generally poor user interface. Although some users report no such issues, the overall feedback is less positive than for BitMEX. The Gate.io desktop platform offers an array of features but could prove daunting for newcomers.

BitMEX

BitMEX's platform is dense, but that's because it's built for experienced traders who understand perpetual and futures contracts. There's a tab for each market, making it reasonably easy to navigate charts and order books, and the leverage slider is a standout feature for adjusting risk per trade. BitMEX is available on desktop and via mobile apps for iOS and Android, though none of it is accessible from Canada.

Gate.io App

Gate's mobile apps have historically drawn poor reviews, with complaints about login issues, 2FA problems and a confusing interface, though the platform has been redesigned since the 2025 rebrand. Either way, the app is irrelevant for Canadians since accounts cannot be opened from Canada.

Security Compliance

BitMEX's technical security record is genuinely strong: it has never been hacked, keeps all bitcoin in cold storage with multi-signature wallets, and has employees manually audit withdrawals. Its regulatory record is another matter. BitMEX and its founders pleaded guilty to violating the US Bank Secrecy Act for failing to run an anti-money-laundering program, the company was fined $100 million in January 2025, and its three co-founders were pardoned by President Trump in March 2025. Funds on the platform have historically been safe from hackers; the risk was always regulatory.

Gate has invested heavily in security in recent years, publishing monthly Proof of Reserves with coverage around 125% and holding licenses in Malta (MiCA), Dubai, Japan and elsewhere. That said, its track record includes past security incidents, and none of its licensing footprint extends to Canada. Since KYC is mandatory and tied to your ID country, Canadians who slip through via VPN risk having accounts frozen with funds inside.

Both BitMEX and Gate.io take their security seriously. BitMEX employs multi-signature deposits and withdrawal schemes, and its security measures have proven robust over the years, as evidenced by the lack of major security breaches. Gate.io also emphasizes security, using hot and cold storage for customer funds and investing in security and law funds. Both platforms offer two-factor authentication.

Regulatory Compliance

BitMEX initially restricted only Ontario and Québec, but as of late 2023 its Restricted Jurisdiction Policy lists all of Canada as restricted. Its US legal troubles have concluded with guilty pleas, a $100 million fine and subsequent presidential pardons for the founders. There is no indication BitMEX intends to register with Canadian regulators or return to the Canadian market.

Gate is not a compliant crypto exchange in Canada. Canada sits on its restricted locations list, Canadian accounts were closed in April 2022, and while Gate has since obtained licenses in the EU, Dubai, Japan and even launched a US entity in 2025, it has shown no sign of registering with Canadian regulators.

BitMEX, due to regulatory constraints, does not offer services to residents of Ontario and Quebec, while other parts of Canada may have access. Meanwhile, Gate.io lists Canada as one of the disallowed countries and reserves the right to block accounts from these regions randomly. For Canadians, neither of these platforms offers a comprehensive, unrestricted trading experience.

Customer support

BitMEX offers support via a contact form on its website and has a detailed FAQ section. For Canadians this is academic, since the platform is off-limits entirely.

Gate offers a help centre, blog and live chat for users in supported countries. Reviews remain mixed, with recurring complaints on Trustpilot about slow support and withdrawal difficulties. For Canadians this is academic, since the platform is off-limits entirely.

BitMEX provides support via email with a ticketing system in place and also maintains a thorough FAQ section on its site. Gate.io, however, has a live chat feature and an extensive help center and blog. Yet, user feedback on Gate.io's customer support is mixed, with some complaints about slow responses or non-responses.

Conclusion

BitMEX, with its focus on cryptocurrency derivatives, advanced trading features, and high liquidity, is a platform designed for experienced traders. However, regulatory constraints limit its accessibility for some Canadians. Gate.io, despite its wide range of altcoins and tools, has user interface issues and poses potential regulatory risks for Canadian users. Ultimately, the choice between the two depends heavily on individual trading needs and the user's ability to navigate potential legal and regulatory challenges. Considering these factors, BitMEX comes out as a more suitable option primarily because of its security record, advanced features, and robust platform, despite its limited availability in certain parts of Canada.

When comparing Gate.io to other exchanges, it’s important to note that Gate.io supports a vast range of over 2,600 cryptocurrencies, making it one of the most versatile platforms. It also provides financial products like staking, crypto loans, and Web3 services, including NFTs and decentralized finance (DeFi). However, unlike some exchanges, CAD support for bank transfers is still unavailable. While Gate.io offers advanced trading options, it's not the most beginner-friendly platform. Mobile app reviews are mixed, with user experiences ranging from positive to critical.
