Crypto is legal in Canada, and the safe way in is a platform on the CSA list of authorized crypto trading platforms. Buy with Interac e-Transfer, pay attention to spreads as well as headline fees, and treat every sale or swap as a taxable event for the CRA. Of the exchanges I have tested, Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple Crypto, Newton and NDAX are on that list today.
- Best first purchase: Coinbase, 9.8/10 in my ranking
- Cheapest flat fee: NDAX at 0.20% per trade
- Bitcoin only, own wallet: Bull Bitcoin
I have tested 61 exchanges and asked nearly 1,000 Canadians what they want from one. The pattern is consistent: people worry about safety first and fees second, and then they pick whichever app their friend uses. This guide is the version I would give a friend who asked me where to start.
| # | Platform | My Score | Status For Canadians |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Coinbase | 9.8/10 | CSA-registered Restricted Dealer, amended decision April 1, 2026 |
| 2 | BloFin | 9.6/10 | Offshore Not on the CSA list; terms restrict Canadian residents |
| 3 | Kraken | 9.2/10 | CSA-registered Decision April 1, 2025 |
| 4 | Wealthsimple Crypto | 8.4/10 | CSA-registered Amended decision December 22, 2025 |
| 5 | Bull Bitcoin | 8.0/10 | FINTRAC MSB Not on the CSA list; Bitcoin only |
| 6 | Newton | 7.9/10 | CSA-registered CIRO investment dealer since March 18, 2026 |
| 7 | NDAX | 7.8/10 | CSA-registered CIRO dealer member, decision December 19, 2024 |
| 8 | BTCC | 7.0/10 | Offshore Not on the CSA list |
| 9 | MEXC | 7.0/10 | Offshore Not on the CSA list; user agreement names Canada as prohibited |
| 10 | Bitcoin Well | 6.4/10 | Not on the CSA list; Bitcoin only |
The offshore platforms keep their rank because of fees and coin selection, but I flag them for a reason: no Canadian investor protection applies if one fails, and their terms restrict Canadian residents. If safety was your answer to my survey, which it was for 41% of readers, stay with the registered names.
Is Crypto Legal In Canada?
Yes. There is no ban on owning or trading crypto. What Canada regulates is the businesses that sell it to you. Provincial securities regulators, coordinated through the Canadian Securities Administrators, require crypto trading platforms to register or receive relief, and FINTRAC supervises them as money services businesses for anti-money-laundering purposes. I cover the legal picture in more detail in are cryptocurrencies legal in Canada.
The CSA publishes two public lists worth knowing. One names the platforms authorized to do business with Canadians. The other names banned platforms, and KuCoin is on it. Check both before you deposit anything anywhere.
How Do You Buy Crypto In Canada For The First Time?
- Pick a registered platform. For most beginners that is Coinbase, Kraken or Wealthsimple Crypto. Not sure which? Take the 60-second quiz.
- Verify your identity. Registered platforms must collect ID. Expect a photo of government ID and a selfie.
- Fund in CAD. Interac e-Transfer is the common route. On NDAX, for example, deposits by Interac e-Transfer and wire are free.
- Buy. Look at the final quote, not just the fee line. On simple buy screens the spread is part of the cost.
- Decide where it lives. Leaving coins on an exchange is convenient. For long-term holdings, a hardware wallet takes the exchange risk out. See my wallet picks.
What Does Crypto Cost To Buy In Canada?
| Platform | Published Fee |
|---|---|
| NDAX | Flat 0.20% on every buy and sell |
| Kraken | Kraken Pro starts at 0.40% maker and 0.80% taker; instant buy and sell is 1% plus a spread |
| Wealthsimple Crypto | Flat 0.5% plus a spread on market orders; CAD 1 extra on orders under CAD 100 |
| Newton | Spread-based, 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC, ETH and USDC |
| Coinbase | Spread plus a fee that Coinbase describes as up to 1.875%, varying by payment method |
The bars show the lowest published headline rate for each, not the all-in cost, because spreads move. Compare the actual quote on the order screen before you confirm.
How Is Crypto Taxed In Canada?
The CRA generally treats cryptocurrency like a commodity. Whether your gains count as capital gains or business income depends on how you trade, and selling, swapping one coin for another and spending crypto are all taxable events. Keep a record of every transaction, with dates, amounts in CAD and what each was for. My crypto taxation guide and how to report your crypto taxes walk through the filing side, and staking income has its own rules.
Which Crypto Mistakes Cost Canadians The Most?
- Using an unregistered platform. QuadrigaCX showed what happens when nobody checks the books. Read what the OSC found.
- Chasing celebrity ads. Fake endorsements are a standing scam. See fake crypto ads using Canadian celebrities and my scam checklist.
- Ignoring spreads. A zero-fee banner with a wide spread is not cheap.
- Skipping records. The CRA expects them even when a platform's CSV export is incomplete.

What Is Crypto, In Plain Terms?
Crypto assets are digital tokens recorded on a shared ledger called a blockchain, kept by thousands of computers instead of one bank. Bitcoin, launched first, is a currency-like asset with a fixed design. Ethereum and others run programs on top of their ledgers. For a beginner the practical point is simpler: what you own is a key that controls an entry on that ledger. If you hold the key, you hold the coins. If an exchange holds it, you hold a claim on the exchange. That distinction is the reason the safe-custody advice on this site keeps repeating.
What Are The Ways To Own Crypto In Canada?
| Method | What You Hold | Good For | Watch Out For |
|---|---|---|---|
| Registered exchange account | A claim on coins the platform holds | Buying and selling with CAD | Platform risk. Withdraw long-term holdings. |
| Own wallet (hardware or software) | The keys | Long-term storage | Lose the backup, lose the coins |
| Bitcoin ETF | Units of a fund | Registered accounts such as a TFSA (if the fund is eligible) | Annual MER, no withdrawal of coins |
| Crypto-related stocks | Shares in a business | Betting on a company | Company risk on top of price risk. See HIVE. |
How Do Interac, Wire And Card Funding Compare?
Funding method changes your cost more than most people expect. Interac e-Transfer is the common route for Canadians, and on NDAX deposits by Interac e-Transfer and wire are free. Withdrawals have their own prices: NDAX charges CAD 1.50 for an Interac e-Transfer withdrawal (up to CAD 10,000 per transaction) and CAD 4.99 for a direct bank deposit. Card purchases usually cost more and some Canadian banks block them. Look at every fee line before your first deposit, not just the trading fee.
How Should You Think About Safety After You Buy?
- Turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app, not SMS.
- Use a unique password from a password manager.
- Withdraw long-term holdings to a wallet you control once the amount matters to you.
- Write the recovery phrase on paper and store it away from the device. Never photograph it or type it into a website.
- Test a small transfer first every time you send to a new address.
- Never share your screen or codes with someone who contacts you.
Where is crypto going next? I have opinions in my take on the next bitcoin, but nothing on this page is a prediction. The one forecast I will make is that the scams will keep coming, so read the scam guide before you fund anything.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Crypto Legal In Canada?
Yes. Owning, buying and selling crypto is legal. Platforms that serve Canadians must register with their provincial securities regulator and, as money services businesses, with FINTRAC. The CSA keeps a public list of authorized platforms and a separate banned list.
What Is The Safest Way To Buy Crypto In Canada?
Use a platform on the CSA list of authorized crypto trading platforms, such as Coinbase, Kraken, Wealthsimple Crypto, Newton or NDAX, then move long-term holdings to a wallet you control.
How Is Crypto Taxed In Canada?
The CRA generally treats cryptocurrency like a commodity. Depending on your circumstances, gains are business income or capital gains. Selling, swapping and spending crypto are all taxable events, so keep records of every transaction.
Which Crypto Exchange Is Best For Beginners In Canada?
I rank Coinbase first at 9.8 out of 10 for a first purchase, with Kraken and Wealthsimple Crypto close behind. Take my quiz if you want a pick based on your own priorities.
Can I Buy Crypto With A Credit Card In Canada?
Some platforms accept cards, but fees are usually higher than Interac e-Transfer, and some banks and card issuers block crypto purchases. Funding by Interac e-Transfer is the cheaper route on most registered platforms.
Are Canadian Crypto Exchanges Insured?
Do not assume so. Exchange accounts are not covered by CDIC deposit insurance. Check each platform's own custody and insurance statements and keep large long-term holdings in self-custody.
