Bitkey is a Bitcoin-only wallet from Block that skips the seed phrase entirely. It uses a 2-of-3 multisig: one key on the Bitkey hardware, one on your phone, and one held on a Block server inside an AWS Nitro Enclave. Bitkey's own site showed CA$360 for the new model and CA$220 for the first-generation unit. It is not in my top 7 hardware wallets for Canadians, because it holds Bitcoin only and depends on your phone and Block's server, but it is the easiest way I know to take your first step off an exchange.
- Best for: Bitcoin beginners who are afraid of losing a seed phrase
- Skip it if: you want to hold anything but Bitcoin, or you do not want a company server in your signing setup
- Price: CA$360 for the new Bitkey, CA$220 for the first generation, as shown on Bitkey's site from Canada
- Honest caveat: the pages I checked did not say whether the software is open source
- PriceCA$360 for the new Bitkey; first-generation Bitkey CA$220
- Secure Elementhardware key generated and stored offline in a 'secure enclave'; chip not named
- ConnectionNFC (to the phone app); USB-C for charging
- Backupno seed phrase: 2-of-3 multisig (hardware key, phone app key with encrypted cloud backup, server key in an AWS Nitro Enclave); Recovery Contacts...
My #1 pick: before you buy the Bitkey, look at the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10), the wallet I use and rank first for Canadians.

What Is The Bitkey And Who Is It For?
Bitkey is Block's attempt at a self-custody wallet that a normal person can use. Bitkey is Bitcoin only. Instead of a 12 or 24 word recovery phrase you copy to paper, you hold keys across devices, so losing any one of them does not lose your coins.
That makes it a different animal from the Tangem card or the Ledger and Trezor family. The main appeal is recovery. Bitkey adds Recovery Contacts and built-in inheritance, which is something most hardware wallets leave to you and a safe deposit box. If you have ever worried that your heirs would not know how to find your coins, this is the problem Bitkey is aimed at.
It does not suit someone who wants every account in one device. I tested it, and my own Ethereum, Solana and XRP sit on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card, because Bitkey holds none of them.
How Secure Is The Bitkey?
The 2-of-3 design is the core of it. A transaction needs two of three keys. One lives on the Bitkey hardware, generated and stored offline in what Bitkey calls a secure enclave (the chip is not named on the pages I checked). One lives in the phone app, with an encrypted cloud backup. The third sits on Block's server in an AWS Nitro Enclave.
The practical effect is that a stolen phone alone cannot move funds, a lost Bitkey alone does not lose funds, and a Block outage need not strand you if you hold the other two. The tradeoff is that this is not a pure offline wallet. Bitkey works over NFC with your phone, so your phone and Block's service are part of the setup. If you do not like a company holding one key, even a key that cannot spend alone, this is not your wallet.
I could not confirm from the pages I checked whether the Bitkey software is open source, so I will not claim it. There is no seed phrase, so there is no seed to steal and no passphrase to add. Block also publishes its work at bitkey.build, which is worth a look if you want technical detail.
How Much Does The Bitkey Cost In Canada?
When fetched from Canada, Bitkey's official page showed the new Bitkey at CA$360 and the first-generation Bitkey at CA$220. The CA$ prices are a good sign that Canadians can order, but shipping terms were not on the page I read, so confirm delivery cost and timing at checkout.
I did not find a duty figure for the device. The CBSA courier rules say shipments from the United States or Mexico are duty and tax free up to CAD 40, duty free with taxes from CAD 40 to 150, and subject to duties and taxes above CAD 150. Other countries are tax free only up to CAD 20. At these prices, budget for taxes unless Bitkey states it collects them at checkout. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre says to buy hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer, so skip marketplace sellers.
How Do You Set Up The Bitkey?
You set up Bitkey through its phone app, so you need an iPhone on iOS 15.2 or newer or an Android phone on 7.0 or newer with NFC. I will not invent the screen-by-screen steps, but the general flow is:
- Order from bitkey.world. Check that the box has not been opened and that you bought from the maker.
- Install the Bitkey app. Your phone creates one of the three keys and keeps an encrypted cloud backup.
- Pair the Bitkey over NFC. The hardware key is generated and stored offline.
- Add Recovery Contacts. Set up the people who can help you recover access, and inheritance if you want it.
- Send a small test. Receive a little Bitcoin before you move your savings.
Does The Bitkey Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Yes. Bitkey is a Bitcoin wallet, so you withdraw Bitcoin to a Bitkey receive address from your exchange, after checking it in the app. Because there is no seed phrase to restore from, test with a small amount and make sure your Recovery Contacts are set before you move more.
Coinbase has a "Sending to myself" checkbox for your own wallet, and for CAD 1,000 or more to another entity it needs the recipient's name and address. Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up for CAD 1,000 or more and does not allow third-party sends. NDAX asks "Who are you sending to?" above CAD 1,000, and choosing yourself needs nothing extra. Newton needs the address saved and verified in its address book first, and Wealthsimple Crypto allows external withdrawals up to CAD 10,000 a day after selfie verification.
The CRA says moving crypto between wallets you own is not a taxable disposition. Keep records for six years, and see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.
Which Coins Does The Bitkey Support?
Bitcoin only. Block says it is a Bitcoin-only wallet. For Ethereum, Solana or XRP you need another device, and the best crypto wallets in Canada page shows which ones cover them.
What Are The Bitkey Pros And Cons?
Pros
- No seed phrase to lose, write down or have stolen
- 2-of-3 design means one lost device does not lose your coins
- Recovery Contacts and inheritance built in
- CA$ pricing on the official page
- Battery lasts up to a year per charge
Cons
- Bitcoin only
- Needs your phone and a Block-held server key
- Open-source status not stated on the pages I checked
- CA$360 is not cheap for a Bitcoin-only wallet
- Canadian shipping terms and duties not stated
Is The Bitkey Worth It For Canadians?
For a beginner who wants Bitcoin off an exchange and fears seed phrases, yes, it is a sensible pick. It is also the one that best answers "what happens to my coins if something happens to me". For someone who wants multi-coin support, a fully offline setup or open-source code you can audit, my top 7 serves you better. I have compared it head to head against Ledger, Trezor and Tangem if you want the contrast.
What Changed For Bitkey Recently?
- Bitkey published its "Meet the new Bitkey" post for the second-generation device with an OLED touchscreen and fingerprint sensor.
- Bitkey disclosed a bug in the enrolment flow for recovery contacts and inheritance beneficiaries. Block says an outside actor could not gain control of the wallet or move funds, found no evidence of exploitation and patched the app.
Has Bitkey Had Security Problems?
Here is every documented security issue I could confirm for Bitkey, newest first, with what it meant for owners and what was done about it.
- : Relationship-enrollment bug. A researcher reported a bug in the enrolment flow for recovery contacts and inheritance beneficiaries. Block says an outside actor could not gain control of the wallet or move funds, with no evidence of exploitation. Block patched the app, and recommended re-enrolling inheritance beneficiaries for a small cohort of 2nd-generation users. (source)

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bitkey A Good Wallet?
It is a good first self-custody wallet for a Bitcoin beginner who fears seed phrases. It holds Bitcoin only and relies on your phone and a Block-held server key, so it is not for everyone.
Does Bitkey Only Work With Bitcoin?
Yes. Bitkey describes itself as a Bitcoin-only wallet and does not support Ethereum, Solana, XRP or tokens.
What Happens If You Lose Your Bitkey?
Bitkey uses a 2-of-3 setup with a hardware key, a phone app key with encrypted cloud backup and a server key, so losing the hardware alone does not lose your coins. Bitkey also offers Recovery Contacts. Check the official recovery guide before you rely on it.
How Much Does The Bitkey Cost In Canada?
Bitkey's official page showed CA$360 for the new Bitkey and CA$220 for the first-generation Bitkey when fetched from Canada. Confirm shipping and taxes at checkout.
Does Bitkey Have A Seed Phrase?
No. Bitkey uses a 2-of-3 multisig instead of a seed phrase, so there is also no passphrase to add.
Will I Pay Duty On A Bitkey In Canada?
I found no duty figure for the device. Under CBSA courier rules, shipments from the United States above CAD 150 attract duties and taxes, so expect taxes unless Bitkey says it collects them at checkout.
Is Moving Bitcoin To A Bitkey A Taxable Event In Canada?
No. The CRA says transfers of crypto between wallets you own are not a taxable disposition. Tick "sending to myself" when your exchange asks, and keep records for at least six years.
