BitBox02 Review 2026: Is It Worth It For Canadians?

Last updated October 3, 2026

Fact-checked by Canadian crypto tradersHow we testWe may earn a commission

The BitBox02 is a Swiss hardware wallet from Shift Crypto with fully open-source firmware, a small OLED screen and touch sliders instead of buttons. It comes as two models, the newer BitBox02 Nova at USD 197 and the original BitBox02 at USD 168, and each model is sold in a Multi edition or a Bitcoin-only edition. The honest caveat: the editions are separate products that cannot be converted later, and the coin list on the Multi edition is short next to Trezor or Ledger.

  • Best for: Bitcoin holders and people who put a premium on open, audited firmware and Swiss design
  • Skip it if: you hold Solana or XRP (the Multi list I could source does not name them) or want a colour touchscreen
  • Price: USD 197 for the Nova, USD 168 for the original, on BitBox's US shop
  • Where it sits: not in my numbered top 7, which starts with the Trezor Safe 7

  • BackupInstant backup and restore with included microSD card; optionally display the 24 recovery words (BIP-39) for manual backup
  • Open Sourceyes: firmware is fully open-source (both Nova and original); source independently audited

My #1 pick: before you buy the BitBox02, look at the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10), the wallet I use and rank first for Canadians.

I tested the BitBox02 as part of my wallet testing, and it is one of the cleanest designs in the category. It does less than the big names, and that is exactly why some people prefer it. This page covers both models and both editions so you can pick the right one before you order.

What Is The BitBox02 And Who Is It For?

The BitBox02 is made by Shift Crypto AG in Switzerland, and BitBox lists two current models. The original BitBox02 is USB-C only and works with Android. The BitBox02 Nova is the newer version: it adds a glass OLED display, an EAL6+ certified secure chip in a dual-chip design, and optional Bluetooth through a feature called Whisper, which BitBox says is end-to-end encrypted and works with iPhone and iPad.

Each model comes as a Multi edition or a Bitcoin-only edition. The Bitcoin-only edition supports Bitcoin and nothing else, so that is a smaller target, which is the reason Bitcoin maximalists like it. The Multi edition handles Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Chainlink, BAT and 1,500+ ERC20 tokens. BitBox says the two editions are different products and cannot be converted later, so choose carefully when you order.

It suits Bitcoin holders who want a dedicated, minimal device. If you hold a broader mix, the Trezor Safe 7 is the one I use for my own ETH, SOL and XRP, and I pair it with a Tangem card.

How Secure Is The BitBox02?

Openness is the headline. BitBox says the firmware is fully open source on both models and that the source has been independently audited. Anyone can read what the device runs, which is the property I value most in a wallet.

The chips differ by model. The Nova uses an EAL6+ certified secure chip in a dual-chip design. The original pairs an ATECC608B secure chip with an ATSAMD51J20A microcontroller. Touch sliders replace buttons, so you slide to confirm on the device, and the display shows the address and amount you are approving.

For backup, the BitBox02 comes with a microSD card for instant backup and restore, and you can also display the 24 recovery words (BIP-39) to write down. Whichever you use, keep the backup offline and out of photos. Whether the device supports a passphrase is not stated on the pages I checked, so confirm that in BitBox's documentation if you need one.

Firmware flaws do get found and fixed. In August 2026 BitBox published an update, firmware 9.26.5, after its own audits found memory corruption on Multi-edition devices before wallet setup, and a silent-payments flaw that could lock funds to an unintended address. It needs a malicious host or app, BitBox reports no exploitation, and the Bitcoin-only edition does not contain the memory flaw. Update the firmware, and read BitBox's post for the details.

How Much Does The BitBox02 Cost In Canada?

On BitBox's US shop the Nova is USD 197 and the original is USD 168, with 0% VAT shown. The shop offers BTC, CHF, EUR, GBP and USD as currencies, and a CAD price was not shown to my fetch.

I could not confirm Canadian shipping or duties from BitBox's pages. The shop text I could read mentions UPS Express to the US with taxes and tariffs covered, and does not mention Canada. Check the checkout for a Canadian address before paying. If it ships, remember that the CBSA treats courier shipments from outside the US and Mexico as free of duty and tax only up to CAD 20, and above that duties and taxes apply. The duty rate for a hardware wallet specifically is not something I can confirm.

BitBox is not one of my affiliate links, so buy directly from BitBox. That is also the safest route, since the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre advises buying hardware wallets directly from the manufacturer.

How Do You Set Up The BitBox02?

Setup runs through the BitBoxApp. These are the parts BitBox's own pages describe, in the sensible order.

  1. Install the BitBoxApp. It runs on Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Linux and Android, and the Nova adds iPhone and iPad.
  2. Connect the device. Use USB-C. On the Nova you can pair over Bluetooth instead.
  3. Create the wallet. Follow the prompts on the BitBox02 screen and slide to confirm.
  4. Back up. Use the included microSD card for instant restore, and consider writing down the 24 recovery words as a second copy.
  5. Store the backup offline. Keep the microSD card and any written words away from your computer and phone.
  6. Send a small test. Check the receiving address on the device screen before moving real money.

Does The BitBox02 Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Yes, because it is just an address you control. Bitcoin works on every Canadian exchange I list, and the Multi edition also takes Ethereum and the other coins it supports. Withdraw to your BitBox02 receive address and confirm it on the device.

For transfers of CAD 1,000 or more, Canada's travel rule (in force since June 1, 2021) triggers a prompt. Coinbase offers a "sending to myself" checkbox. NDAX asks who you are sending to, and needs no extra details if it is you. Kraken shows a pop-up for CAD 1,000 or more. Newton requires you to save and verify the address first. Wealthsimple Crypto supports external wallets, with a selfie check before your first withdrawal.

The CRA says transfers between wallets you own are not a taxable disposition, though you still need to keep records. See my crypto taxation in Canada guide.

Which Coins Does The BitBox02 Support?

The Multi edition supports Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Chainlink, BAT and 1,500+ ERC20 tokens. The Bitcoin-only edition supports Bitcoin only. Solana and XRP are not on the list I could source, so if you hold those, check BitBox's current list before ordering or look at the Trezor Safe 7. For a broader comparison see my BitBox vs Trezor and BitBox vs Ledger pages.

What Are The BitBox02 Pros And Cons?

Pros

  • Fully open-source, independently audited firmware
  • Bitcoin-only edition for a smaller attack surface
  • Swiss maker with a clean, simple design
  • microSD backup plus optional 24 word backup
  • Nova adds an EAL6+ chip and optional Bluetooth for iPhone and iPad
  • Original model is cheaper at USD 168

Cons

  • Multi and Bitcoin-only editions cannot be converted later
  • Short coin list on the Multi edition
  • Small OLED screen and no colour touchscreen
  • Original has no Bluetooth
  • Canadian shipping and duties not confirmed on BitBox's pages
  • August 2026 firmware flaws were fixed in 9.26.5

Is The BitBox02 Worth It For Canadians?

For Bitcoin holders who care about open code, yes. The Bitcoin-only Nova is the version I would point a Bitcoin-focused friend toward, because you get the newer chip and the smaller attack surface. For a mixed portfolio, I would go to the Trezor or a Tangem instead, since both cover more chains.

Before you order, confirm that BitBox ships to your Canadian address and what the final total looks like. See the full best crypto wallets in Canada ranking for the wider field.

What Changed For The BitBox02 Recently?

  • BitBox reported that attackers abused its Brevo newsletter account to send phishing emails and download its subscriber list, with shop orders, systems, app and devices not affected.
  • BitBox published its Dixence update, fixing two severe firmware flaws and a funds-locking bug in firmware 9.26.5.

Has BitBox Had Security Problems?

Here is every documented security issue I could confirm for BitBox (Shift Crypto), newest first, with what it meant for owners and what was done about it.

  • : Brevo newsletter account abused. Attackers exploited Brevo and sent two phishing campaigns from BitBox's account and downloaded its subscriber list. Subscribed email addresses only; shop orders, systems, app and devices not affected. BitBox notified Brevo, warned its list and deactivated the phishing links. (source)
  • : Dixence update: two severe firmware flaws and one funds-locking bug. BitBox's internal audits found memory corruption on Multi-edition devices before wallet setup, a silent-payments flaw that could lock funds to an unintended address, and more severe impact for a bootloader flaw first fixed in the July Oeschinen update. Only with a malicious host or app; no reports of exploitation or stolen funds; the Bitcoin-only edition does not contain the memory flaw. Fixed in firmware 9.26.5; users told to update. (source)
