BitBox02 is a Swiss, fully open-source device with a microSD backup and a Bitcoin-only edition; Trezor's Safe 7 is a colour-touchscreen device with the wider coin list. The honest difference: BitBox is leaner and Bitcoin-friendly, Trezor covers more coins and sells a model for every budget.
BitBox Vs Trezor: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the Trezor Safe 7 is the better pick because it scores 9.6 against 8.2 on my list.
What Happens If You Lose Your BitBox02 Or Trezor Safe 7?
BitBox02: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Instant backup and restore with included microSD card; optionally display the 24 recovery words (BIP-39) for manual backup. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-10 (Brevo newsletter account abused).
Trezor Safe 7: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 12-, 20- and 24-word backup; Advanced multi-share backup (Shamir). Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 6 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-09 (Brevo newsletter provider breach, phishing from Trezor's address).

Which Is More Secure, BitBox Or Trezor?
Two open-source camps with different philosophies. BitBox is made by Shift Crypto AG in Switzerland and its firmware is fully open source on both the BitBox02 Nova and the original BitBox02, with the source independently audited. The Nova uses an EAL6+ dual-chip design; the original pairs an ATECC608B secure chip with an ATSAMD51J20A microcontroller. Trezor's Safe 7 is open source too and goes further on hardware: TROPIC01, an EAL6+ Optiga element and an STM32U5, three chips from three vendors.
Both disclosed problems this summer, and both said so themselves. BitBox's August 17, 2026 "Dixence" update fixed two severe firmware flaws and a funds-locking bug in firmware 9.26.5; they need a malicious host or app, nobody reported exploitation or stolen funds, and the Bitcoin-only edition does not contain the memory flaw (BitBox post). Trezor disclosed a TROPIC01 chip laser attack on June 3, 2026 that needs possession and lab gear; it says PIN, funds and backup are not exposed (Trezor's response). Both also had a September 2026 Brevo newsletter incident touching email lists only.
One practical difference: a BitBox02 Bitcoin-only edition and a Multi edition are two different products and cannot be converted later. Pick before you pay.
Which Is Easier To Use?
The BitBox02 has no buttons. You navigate with capacitive touch sliders on the edge of a tiny 128 x 64 OLED. That sounds strange until you try it; it is minimal and fast, but you are checking addresses on a small screen. Backup is the nicest part: an included microSD card restores in seconds, and you can also display the 24 BIP-39 words for a paper copy. The BitBoxApp runs on Windows 10+, macOS 12+, Linux and Android, and the Nova adds iPhone and iPad through optional end-to-end encrypted Bluetooth ("Whisper"). The original is USB-C only.
The Trezor Safe 7 has a 2.5 inch colour touchscreen with haptic feedback, Bluetooth, Qi2 charging and full iOS compatibility in Trezor Suite. It is easier on the eyes. Backup options are 12, 20 or 24 words, plus advanced multi-share. If you want one number: BitBox is simpler, Trezor is friendlier.
Which Supports More Coins?
Trezor wins on breadth. It lists thousands of coins and tokens and 30+ third-party apps. BitBox's Multi edition supports Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Chainlink, BAT and 1,500+ ERC20 tokens, and the Bitcoin-only edition does Bitcoin only. If you hold Solana or XRP, check the lists first: BitBox does not name them on the page I fetched, and Trezor's page does not name XRP either, though I keep XRP on my own Trezor and Tangem setup.
Which Costs Less In Canada?
Neither is cheap. The BitBox02 Nova is USD 197 and the original USD 168 (US shop, no VAT shown). The Safe 7 is USD 249, and Trezor also sells the Safe 5 at USD 129 and the Safe 3 at USD 59 if you want a cheaper entry. BitBox's shop offers BTC, CHF, EUR, GBP and USD, with no CAD price on the page I fetched, and its shop statement on tariffs only mentions the US, so I cannot confirm Canadian shipping or duties. Trezor lists Amazon Canada as an authorised reseller. Using the CBSA thresholds as a guide, a courier parcel from outside the US and Mexico is only duty and tax free up to CAD 20.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both work with a standard Bitcoin or Ethereum address. Wealthsimple Crypto allows external withdrawals with a selfie ID check and daily limits up to CAD 10,000. Newton needs the address saved and MFA-verified in its Address Book first. Under FINTRAC's travel rule in force since June 1, 2021, transfers of CAD 1,000 or more carry extra information. Transfers between wallets you own are not a taxable disposition, says the CRA. For Bitcoin, BitBox is one of the neatest pairings with a desktop wallet you control. See my Wealthsimple Crypto review.
Who Owns BitBox, And Is Trezor Discontinued?
BitBox is made by Shift Crypto AG of Switzerland. Trezor is made by Trezor Company s.r.o., part of the SatoshiLabs Group. Trezor is not discontinued: the Safe 3, Safe 5 and Safe 7 are on sale. The Model One and Model T are the old ones; Trezor says the Model One is no longer sold, and the Model T page names the Safe 5 as its successor.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose BitBox if you are mostly a Bitcoin holder who values a fully open, audited Swiss device and the microSD backup. Choose Trezor if you hold many coins, want a colour screen and a price ladder from USD 59 to USD 249. Read my BitBox02 review and Trezor Safe 7 review, or the best crypto wallets in Canada.
BitBox says a Brevo newsletter account was abused; only subscribed email addresses were affected.
Trezor says a Brevo newsletter provider breach exposed about 347,000 newsletter addresses.
BitBox ships firmware 9.26.5 with its Dixence update.
