What Happens If You Lose Your ELLIPAL X Card Or Ledger Flex?

ELLIPAL X Card: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: create 12/18/24-word seed; recover 12/15/18/21/24-word; link several cards to one wallet as backups. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 1 security issue is on record for the maker, the latest on 2019-06-25 (Ledger Donjon seed extraction from Ellipal).

Ledger Flex: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase; Ledger Recovery Key (NFC) now included with the Flex; optional paid Ledger Recover (Coincover), availability depends on country of ID document. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 7 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-27 (Security Bulletins 023, 024, 025: signing-review bypasses).

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

Which Is More Secure, ELLIPAL Or Ledger?

The two devices here are about as different as hardware wallets get. The ELLIPAL X Card is a credit-card shaped NFC wallet with no screen, no battery and no cable. The Ledger Flex is a screen-and-touch device you hold in your hand. ELLIPAL also makes the Titan 2.0, a larger air-gapped device, but I focus on the X Card because it is the one most people compare against the Flex.

Both use a Common Criteria EAL6+ secure element. On the X Card you create the wallet offline on a separate "Starter" device, set a Card-PIN of 6 to 16 digits, and the card factory resets after 10 wrong attempts. Backups are a 12, 18 or 24 word seed, and you can link several cards to one wallet so a second card acts as a backup. Passphrase is supported. The Flex gives you a 24 word recovery phrase, an NFC Ledger Recovery Key in the box and the optional paid Ledger Recover service.

Here is the key trade-off. A card with no screen cannot show you the amount and address you are signing, so you are trusting your phone's screen. The Flex shows the details on its own display. That is a real security difference and I would weigh it above any chip rating.

Records: in 2019 Ledger's Donjon team found several flaws in an ELLIPAL device, including one that let someone with physical access extract the seed and others that allowed a supply-chain backdoor (Ledger's write-up). I could not confirm which ELLIPAL model it covered, and Ledger is a competitor, so read it with that in mind. ELLIPAL's 2026 record shows no incident in my file. Ledger's list includes the 2020 shop database leak, the December 2023 Connect Kit attack and the August 2026 signing-review bulletins (bulletin 023).

Which Is Easier To Use?

The X Card is the simpler idea: tap the card on your phone and approve in the ELLIPAL app (Android and iOS, with WalletConnect for dApps). Setup needs the separate Starter step, which is an extra thing to understand. The Flex uses a 2.8 inch E Ink touchscreen, Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C, with the Ledger Wallet app on iOS, Android and desktop. The Flex wins on seeing what you sign, and the card wins on pocket size and having nothing to charge: ELLIPAL quotes a 30 year lifespan with no battery.

Which Supports More Coins?

ELLIPAL's headline is 10,000+ tokens across 45+ blockchains, with NFTs on Ethereum and Polygon. Ledger says 500+ coins directly in its app, naming Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and stablecoins, and more through third-party wallets. ELLIPAL's figure is bigger on paper, but the quality of app support for a long-tail token is what counts, so check your coin on the maker's list first.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

Shipping To CanadaShipping policy lists Canada at 7 to 15 business daysCanadian storefront with CA$ pricing

The gap is large: the X Card is USD 59 against USD 249 for the Flex. If you want a cheap backup device, or you are protecting a modest amount, the X Card is hard to argue with. ELLIPAL's shipping policy lists Canada at 7 to 15 business days, and I did not find a Canadian reseller, so expect an international delivery with possible duties. Ledger's Canadian storefront shows CA$369 for the Flex.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Either one is a receiving address. With Coinbase, answer the wallet-type question and tick "Sending to myself". With Wealthsimple, your first external withdrawal needs a selfie ID check, and the daily limit is up to CA$10,000, so test with a small amount first. Withdrawals to your own wallet are not taxable, per Wealthsimple's help page and the CRA, but keep a record of every move. See my Wealthsimple Crypto review for the full picture.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the ELLIPAL X Card if price and portability matter most, you are comfortable approving on your phone's screen, and you want a cheap second device to split your holdings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Crypto Wallet Is Better Than Ledger?

For open-source firmware my number one is the Trezor Safe 7, and for a seedless card my number two is Tangem. If price drives you, the ELLIPAL X Card at USD 59 is a lot cheaper, but it has no screen. The best crypto wallets in Canada page has the full ranking.

Is ELLIPAL Trustworthy?

I found no 2026 security incident for ELLIPAL, but Ledger's Donjon team published a 2019 write-up of flaws in an ELLIPAL device, including a physical-access seed extraction. I could not confirm which model that covered. The X Card uses an EAL6+ chip, so judge it on today's design, and always check the address on a screen you trust.

What Are The Top 5 Cold Wallets?

My own ranking has the Trezor Safe 7 first, then Tangem, the Ledger Flex, OneKey Pro and SafePal S1. It reflects my testing and my judgement, not a lab test. The best crypto wallets in Canada page lists all seven.

Can I Lose My Crypto On Ledger?

Yes, in the usual ways: losing your recovery phrase, giving it to a scammer, or approving a transaction you did not read. No Ledger device seed was drained remotely in the incidents I tracked, and Ledger says it has no evidence of exploitation of its 2026 bulletins. Ledger never asks for your recovery phrase.

Do I Pay Duties On A Hardware Wallet Shipped To Canada?

The CBSA says courier shipments from countries other than the US and Mexico are duty and tax free up to CA$20 and taxed above that. The duty rate for a hardware wallet itself is not on the page I checked, so ask the courier. Ledger's Canadian storefront shows CA$ pricing.

Which Is Cheaper, The ELLIPAL X Card Or The Ledger Flex?

ELLIPAL X Card: USD 59 (X Card). Ledger Flex: USD 249 and CA$369 on the Canadian storefront; free shipping, usually ships within 24 hours.

Do The ELLIPAL X Card And The Ledger Flex Ship To Canada?

ELLIPAL X Card: yes by implication: Canada (CAD) selectable in the store country list. Ledger Flex: yes: Canadian storefront shows CA$ pricing; authorised Canadian resellers: Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada, Amazon Canada (Triniti Tech also appears on the reseller page).
