Both are screenless NFC cards, and both are aimed at people who want a cold wallet without a cable. The honest one-line difference: ELLIPAL gives you a conventional seed and PIN, while Tangem is seedless and lists more assets.

What Happens If You Lose Your ELLIPAL X Card Or Tangem Wallet?

ELLIPAL X Card: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: create 12/18/24-word seed; recover 12/15/18/21/24-word; link several cards to one wallet as backups. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 1 security issue is on record for the maker, the latest on 2019-06-25 (Ledger Donjon seed extraction from Ellipal).

Tangem Wallet: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Seedless by design: extra cards back each other up (2 or 3 card sets); a 12-word seed is optional for advanced users. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-07-09 (Ledger Donjon laser attack on Tangem cards).

How Much Does It Cost To Get These Wallets To Canada?

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

Both of these are credit-card-shaped NFC wallets with no screen, no battery and no cable, so the comparison is really about what each one does differently: how you back up, how many coins you can reach, and how each has held up under scrutiny. I tested both, and I keep a Tangem card myself for part of my holdings.

Which Is More Secure, ELLIPAL Or Tangem?

Both use a certified secure chip, ELLIPAL at Common Criteria EAL6+ and Tangem at EAL6+ too. The real divide is how a wallet is born. The ELLIPAL X Card creates its wallet offline on a separate device ELLIPAL calls a Starter, then you link cards to it. Protection is a Card-PIN of 6 to 16 digits, and the card resets itself after 10 wrong attempts. It generates a 12, 18 or 24 word seed, so you have a conventional paper backup, and a passphrase is supported.

Tangem skips the seed. You buy a 2 or 3 card set and the cards back each other up. A 12-word seed exists only as an option. Access is by access code or biometrics in the phone app. Tangem's app is open source on GitHub; I could not confirm whether ELLIPAL's card firmware is open source, so I will not claim it either way.

On record: ELLIPAL's public issue is old. In June 2019 Ledger's Donjon team found flaws including one that let someone with physical access extract the seed, and others enabling supply-chain or evil-maid attacks (Ledger's write-up). I found no 2026 ELLIPAL incident. Tangem's: a private key written to app logs in late 2024 for a tiny group of users (under 0.1%, no funds lost), and a July 2026 laser attack, also from Ledger Donjon, that needs physical possession and about $250,000 of lab gear and cannot be patched because the cards have no update path (Ledger Donjon). Tangem has Riscure and Cure53 audits on file. ELLIPAL has no audit entry in my records, which is a gap rather than a verdict.

Which Is Easier To Use?

They feel similar: tap the card to a phone. The extra step with ELLIPAL is the Starter, because the wallet is created offline and then cards are linked to it, which is a good security idea and one more thing to keep track of. Tangem is closer to open the app, tap, done. ELLIPAL's app runs on Android and iOS and supports WalletConnect for dApps. Neither has a screen, so you cannot check an address on the device itself.

Which Supports More Coins?

Tangem is ahead on raw numbers, but 10,000 tokens already covers every coin most people will hold. Check the exact token on each maker's list before buying, especially for newer chains.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

The ELLIPAL X Card is USD 59 on the official store, and Canada (CAD) is selectable in the country list. ELLIPAL's shipping policy gives Canada 7 to 15 business days. Tangem's 2-card set is USD 54.90 and the 3-card set USD 69.90, with Canada listed at 4 to 11 business days and USD 16.00 shipping, free over USD 100. Neither page states duty rates, and CBSA charges apply to most overseas courier orders above CA$20, so expect something at the door. Tangem also runs an extra 10% off until October 25, and my code OCRYPTOCANADA gives 10% off there.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

The same way any self-custody wallet does: copy the receive address, withdraw from Coinbase (tick "sending to myself"), Wealthsimple Crypto (selfie ID before the first external withdrawal) or Newton (the address must be saved in your Address Book first). Send a small test first. Moving between your own wallets is not a disposition for the CRA, but keep records.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose ELLIPAL if you want a conventional 12 to 24 word seed on a card, a PIN you control and offline wallet creation. Choose Tangem if you would rather have no seed to protect and prefer the larger asset list and the open-source app. If you are undecided between a card and a screen, see Tangem Vs Ledger and ELLIPAL Vs Trezor.

A practical note on backups, because it is where card wallets go wrong. ELLIPAL lets you link several cards to one wallet, so a second card is your spare; Tangem sells the spare as part of the set. Either way, buy more than one card, store them in different places and never photograph a seed. If you go the ELLIPAL route, write the 12, 18 or 24 words on paper the moment the Starter shows them, then check that you can restore before you move real money.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ellipal A Good Wallet?

The X Card is a screenless NFC card with an EAL6+ chip, a 6 to 16 digit PIN, a 12, 18 or 24 word seed and a USD 59 price. Its public security issue dates from 2019, when Ledger Donjon showed a physical-access seed extraction. Good for small to mid holdings.

Is Ellipal Better Than Ledger?

Different trade-offs. ELLIPAL is a cheap screenless card with offline wallet creation, and Ledger devices have screens and a bigger ecosystem. See my ELLIPAL Vs Ledger comparison for the head-to-head.

Has Ellipal Ever Been Hacked?

I found one dated public finding: in June 2019 Ledger Donjon showed that someone with physical access could extract the seed. No remote exploit was reported, and I found no 2026 ELLIPAL incident.

Is Ellipal A Web 3 Wallet?

Partly. The ELLIPAL app supports WalletConnect, so you can connect the card to dApps, and the X Card handles NFTs on Ethereum and Polygon. The keys still stay on the card.

Which Is Better, Tangem Or Ellipal?

Tangem if you want no seed and the biggest asset list. ELLIPAL if you want a standard seed backup and a PIN. Both ship to Canada and neither has a screen.

Which Is Cheaper, The ELLIPAL X Card Or The Tangem Wallet?

ELLIPAL X Card: USD 59 (X Card). Tangem Wallet: 2-card set USD 54.90; 3-card set USD 69.90; Family Pack USD 129.80; Ring and 2 cards USD 160; Pro Kit USD 180 (prices shown in USD to a US visitor).

Do The ELLIPAL X Card And The Tangem Wallet Ship To Canada?

ELLIPAL X Card: yes by implication: Canada (CAD) selectable in the store country list. Tangem Wallet: yes: Canada listed with Standard delivery 4-11 business days, USD 16.00 shipping; free standard shipping on orders over USD 100 (VAT excluded).
