Robinhood is the new name Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers are moving to, after Robinhood bought their parent company, WonderFi, on June 1, 2026. Coinbase is my number one exchange for Canadians. Both are registered in Canada, so the choice comes down to fees, coin range and how much you value Robinhood's fee (0.50% through October 31, 2026, then 0.95%) against Coinbase's bigger menu.

Robinhood Vs Coinbase: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Coinbase is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, coins available). Robinhood still comes out ahead on published trading fee. Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

Robinhood: 0.50% per order through Oct 31, 2026, 0.95% from Nov 1, 2026 (CCML fee schedule effective 2026-10-01); Robinhood says it keeps no spread. Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. Coinbase: High end is the Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% on simple buys and sells (varies by payment method), checked 2026-10-03, with a spread on top that is shown only in the order preview and a separate 1% on simple limit orders. Low end is the 0% maker rate Coinbase advertises for Advanced, but the Canadian rate table is not public. Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.

What Do Robinhood And Coinbase Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

Robinhood Only

  • Staking (announced): ETH and SOL staking from about CAD 1, listed as coming soon; CCML's schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards on the former Coinsquare platform.
  • OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
  • Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.

Coinbase Only

  • Coinbase Advanced: Order book trading with no spread, limit orders and charting. The Canadian maker/taker table is shown only after signing in, so the rate is not published here.
  • Staking: Standard commission 35% of rewards for ADA, ATOM, AVAX, DOT, ETH, MATIC, SOL and XTZ, lower for Coinbase One tiers (31.75%, 28.5%, 25.25%). Canadians must pass a staking appropriateness questionnaire, repeated every 12 months.
  • Coinbase One: Subscription that waives the Coinbase fee on simple buys and sells, with a spread still included. It excludes Advanced and the 1% limit order fee. Subscription price not retrieved.
  • USDC rewards: Rewards on USDC balances, not guaranteed and not covered by CIPF or CDIC. The advertised rate (up to 3.75% APY) was seen on the navigation menu only.
  • Derivatives for eligible investors: Futures through Coinbase Financial Markets launched 2026-09-02 for eligible Canadian investors only, not retail.

What Happens To Your Money If Robinhood Or Coinbase Fails?

Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.

Coinbase: The CSA Restricted Dealer decision gives regulator oversight, a suitability questionnaire, loss notifications and purchase caps, but it is not deposit insurance. Coinbase says fiat and crypto are not protected by CIPF or CDIC. Customer assets sit in omnibus accounts at Coinbase, Inc. and Coinbase Custody Trust Company, and the Canadian pages publish no insurance figure or proof of reserves, so the 1:1 holding promise rests on Coinbase's own statement and public-company audits. Account holds on mismatched names or EFT deposits can lock funds for days.

How Are Robinhood And Coinbase Treated For Tax In Canada?

Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.

Coinbase: Buying crypto with CAD is not a disposition, but selling, converting one coin to another, spending, and staking rewards are taxable events. Coinbase Taxes gives a gain/loss report and a transaction history as CSV; you still file the Schedule 3 yourself.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Robinhood Or Coinbase?

Choose Robinhood If

  • You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
  • You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
  • You are fine with market orders only for now

Choose Coinbase If

  • You want a large public company with a simple app and a CSA-registered Canadian entity.
  • You are comfortable using Advanced rather than the simple buy screen, which costs far more.
  • You want free Interac e-Transfer or EFT funding and a wide altcoin list.

Both platforms serve Canadians, but they are built differently. Robinhood Crypto Canada is a new service with a single percentage fee run by Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd. (CCML), a CIRO Dealer Member owned by Robinhood Markets, Inc. since the WonderFi deal closed on June 1, 2026. Coinbase is the platform I rank first, at 9.8 out of 10. Robinhood is not in my top 10, and I have not used it, so the Robinhood side below is built from its own fee, transfer and limits pages.

If you came here as a Bitbuy customer: Bitbuy accounts are moving to Robinhood, and the Bitbuy app turns read-only once you switch. The details are in my Robinhood Crypto Canada review.

How Do Robinhood And Coinbase Compare On Fees?

Robinhood's official CCML fee schedule (effective October 1, 2026) charges 0.5% of the trade value on every order through October 31, 2026, and 0.95% from November 1, 2026. Orders are riskless-principal, effectively market orders with a 1% slippage limit on buys and 5% on sells. There are no account maintenance or deposit fees, and the help page still shows only 0.50%. Coinbase's Canadian fee disclosure says it may charge a Coinbase fee of up to 1.875% (it varies by payment method) on top of the spread shown in your order preview, plus a separate 1% execution fee on simple limit orders.

Fees On A CAD 500 Buy
ItemRobinhoodCoinbase
Published Fee0.50% through Oct 31, 2026; 0.95% from Nov 1Up to 1.875% plus spread
Fee On CAD 500CAD 2.50 through Oct 31; CAD 4.75 from Nov 1Up to CAD 9.38, plus spread
SpreadNot published on the fee pageShown in the order preview
Other FeesNo account maintenance or deposit feesFee varies by payment method

On the numbers Robinhood is still cheaper than Coinbase on a simple buy, even after the rise: CAD 4.75 from November 1 against up to CAD 9.38 plus spread at Coinbase. A round trip is CAD 5.00 now and CAD 9.50 from November 1. The caveat is that Coinbase's top figure is a ceiling that varies with how you pay, and both sides can have a spread inside the quote. Check the final amount before you confirm. Coinbase's Advanced trading rate table for Canada could not be verified from an official Canadian page, so I leave those rates out.

Which Is Better For Funding And Withdrawing CAD?

Coinbase says you can add cash free with Interac e-Transfer and EFT, and it supports Interac e-Transfer and EFT cash-outs, though it does not publish a withdrawal fee. Robinhood supports Interac e-Transfer and domestic wire, and says it charges no deposit fees. Some users on Reddit report Interac funding delays and slow support at Robinhood, which is anecdotal, so I would send a small amount first.

For moving crypto out, Robinhood charges no fee of its own, but transfers need identity verification plus 2FA, can take up to 5 business days to enable, and are not available for every coin. Bitcoin has no Lightning support and no taproot bc1p addresses. Coinbase charges a network fee only on on-chain sends and a 0.2% processing fee on Lightning sends.

Which Has More Coins?

Coinbase, by a wide margin. Its Canadian page says 200+ assets. Robinhood lists 50+, including BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, DOGE, ADA, AVAX, XLM, LINK, SHIB, LTC, PEPE, AAVE, BONK and WIF. That covers the big names and some memecoins, but if you want a smaller altcoin, check the list before you fund anything. Robinhood also applies Net Purchase Limits to restricted coins, while BTC, ETH, LTC and BCH are unrestricted.

Which Is Safer?

Both are regulated in Canada. Coinbase Canada is registered as a Restricted Dealer in all provinces and territories and has a CSA decision amended on April 1, 2026. Robinhood's accounts sit with CCML, a CIRO Dealer Member, with the change of control approved on May 20, 2026. Coinbase says it holds customer assets 1:1 and does not lend them without permission. Robinhood says crypto is held in trust with approved custodians and that it does not lend customer crypto or use it to back leveraged positions.

On protection they match: crypto is not covered by CIPF at either one. Robinhood holds CAD in segregated accounts at a Canadian bank with CIPF cover within limits, and Coinbase says its Canadian fiat wallets are not covered by CIPF or CDIC. I would call that a small edge for Robinhood on cash, and nothing for crypto.

Which App Is Easier To Use?

I can speak to Coinbase from my own testing of exchanges, and it is the one I would hand a beginner: simple buy flow, a huge coin list, staking for ETH, ADA, SOL, ATOM and XTZ. Apple Canada shows it at 4.56 from about 65,000 ratings. Robinhood's app is new to Canada, and I have no ratings figure I can verify, so I will not judge it. Its main appeal is a simple, readable fee, now 0.95% from November 1. Staking for ETH and SOL is listed as coming soon.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Each?

Robinhood Pros

  • Fee of 0.50% through Oct 31, 2026 and 0.95% from Nov 1, still under Coinbase's top rate
  • No account maintenance or deposit fees
  • CIRO Dealer Member
  • Home for Bitbuy and Coinsquare users

Robinhood Cons

  • Fee nearly doubles on Nov 1, 2026
  • 50+ coins
  • No staking yet
  • Transfers not available for every coin
  • Not in my top 10

Coinbase Pros

  • 200+ assets
  • Free Interac e-Transfer and EFT deposits
  • Staking available
  • My number one, 9.8/10

Coinbase Cons

  • Up to 1.875% fee plus spread on simple buys
  • Cash-out fees not published
  • Crypto not covered by CIPF

Who Should Choose Robinhood, And Who Should Choose Coinbase?

Choose Robinhood if your Bitbuy or Coinsquare account is being moved and you want a simple fee on a handful of mainstream coins, and accept that it is 0.95% from November 1. Choose Coinbase if you are starting from scratch, want the widest coin list, or want staking today. That is why it holds first place in my ranking.
