Robinhood took over Bitbuy and Coinsquare when it bought WonderFi on June 1, 2026, and those customers are being moved to its app. Wealthsimple Crypto is #4 on my list. Both are registered Canadian dealers, so this comes down to Robinhood's fee (0.50% through October 31, 2026, then 0.95%) against Wealthsimple's 0.5% plus spread, and which app holds the coins you want.

Robinhood Vs Wealthsimple Crypto: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, Wealthsimple Crypto is the better choice (it wins on my ranking, published trading fee, coins available). Robinhood is best for former Bitbuy and Coinsquare customers who want a flat, simple fee.

Robinhood: 0.50% per order through Oct 31, 2026, 0.95% from Nov 1, 2026 (CCML fee schedule effective 2026-10-01); Robinhood says it keeps no spread. Slippage within 1% on buys and 5% on sells passes to the client. Wealthsimple Crypto: Flat 0.5% fee per order. The high end adds the 1.00% spread used in Wealthsimple's own CAD 5,000 example (spread varies with market conditions) from the fee schedule dated 2026-09-24. Active Trader status (50 eligible trades in a calendar month) removes the spread. A CAD 1 surcharge applies to orders under CAD 100 (not counted here). Ranges reflect each platform’s published band, not a single quote. Bank and network fees are not included.

What Do Robinhood And Wealthsimple Crypto Offer Beyond Buying And Selling?

Robinhood Only

  • Staking (announced): ETH and SOL staking from about CAD 1, listed as coming soon; CCML's schedule shows a staking fee of up to 30% of rewards on the former Coinsquare platform.
  • OTC desk: USD deposits and large trades go through the OTC desk at launch, with a quoted spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.
  • Coinsquare Trade: Request-for-quote product on the Coinsquare platform with a disclosed spread of 0.5% to 1.85%.

Wealthsimple Crypto Only

  • Staking: ETH, SOL, ADA and DOT, advertised as up to 5% a year. Wealthsimple keeps 30% of rewards (15% for Generation) and validators take their own commission (ETH about 5%).
  • Crypto swaps: Swap one eligible coin for another in one trade with one fee instead of two.
  • Recurring buys and price-target orders: Schedule automatic purchases or set a price at which an order executes. Recurring orders do not count toward Active Trader status.
  • DEX trading: On-chain token access with CAD 0 network fees, per Wealthsimple, through the Crypto Web3 Wallet.
  • Active Trader status: Earned with 50 or more eligible trades in a calendar month, valid for that month and the next. Cuts the crypto fee to 0.5% to 0% with a 0% spread, plus priority phone and email support.

What Happens To Your Money If Robinhood Or Wealthsimple Crypto Fails?

Robinhood: Robinhood Canada runs on Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO investment dealer, so it is under dealer rules and CIRO supervision. CIPF covers CAD balances within limits but never crypto. Customer crypto stays in CCML's custody arrangement with crime insurance of an unpublished amount, and no proof of reserves was found. If the firm failed or was hacked, uninsured crypto would be an unsecured claim. The platform is in a migration, so features such as limit orders and swaps are still missing.

Wealthsimple Crypto: Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO dealer member, so cash in the account is covered by CIPF, but crypto is explicitly not covered by CIPF, CDIC or any investor protection scheme. Wealthsimple says crypto is held in trust and would remain yours in an insolvency, and that custodial partners each carry over CAD 75M of insurance, but that cover is held by the partners and the custodians are not named on the product page. No proof of reserves is published. Hot wallet losses are the part covered by the Coincover recovery arrangement.

How Are Robinhood And Wealthsimple Crypto Treated For Tax In Canada?

Robinhood: Buying with CAD is not a disposition. Selling for CAD is, and so is any later swap or spend. Robinhood gives statements and annual tax documents for past Bitbuy and Coinsquare activity; CSV and CRA-ready exports were not verified.

Wealthsimple Crypto: Selling, swapping one coin for another and staking rewards are taxable; withdrawing crypto to your own wallet is not a disposition. Wealthsimple provides a Realized Gains and Losses report as PDF or CSV and a Crypto Transaction Summary CSV, and says there is no official tax slip for crypto.

Selling, swapping or spending crypto is a disposition for the CRA on any platform. This is not tax advice: see my guide to crypto taxes in Canada.

Which Should You Choose, Robinhood Or Wealthsimple Crypto?

Choose Robinhood If

  • You want one flat percentage fee and no Robinhood spread (0.50% to Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%)
  • You are a former Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer moving to the new app
  • You are fine with market orders only for now

Choose Wealthsimple Crypto If

  • You already hold stocks or cash at Wealthsimple and want crypto in the same app.
  • You value a CIRO-regulated dealer and a simple flat fee over the lowest possible cost.
  • You trade 50 or more times a month and can qualify for Active Trader pricing.

Robinhood Crypto Canada and Wealthsimple Crypto are both CIRO-dealer products, and both show a 0.50% fee today. That similarity ends on November 1, 2026, when Robinhood's fee rises to 0.95%, and it was always a trap because the two work out differently once you look at the spread. Wealthsimple Crypto is fourth in my ranking at 8.4 out of 10. Robinhood is not in my top 10, I have not tested it, and the Robinhood side below comes from its own fee, transfer and limits pages.

Bitbuy readers: your account is being moved to Robinhood, after which the Bitbuy app becomes read-only. I cover the process in my Robinhood Crypto Canada review.

How Do Robinhood And Wealthsimple Crypto Compare On Fees?

Robinhood's official CCML fee schedule (effective October 1, 2026) charges 0.5% of the trade value on each order through October 31, 2026, and 0.95% from November 1, 2026. Orders are riskless-principal with a 1% slippage limit on buys and 5% on sells. The help page still shows only 0.50%. Wealthsimple's schedule, last updated September 24, 2026, charges a flat 0.5% Baseline Trading Fee on every order plus a price spread on market orders. Limit orders carry no spread. Its own example pairs a 0.50% fee with a 1.00% spread for 1.50% in total, and orders under CAD 100 take a CAD 1 surcharge.

Fees On A CAD 500 Buy
ItemRobinhoodWealthsimple Crypto
Published Fee0.50% through Oct 31, 2026; 0.95% from Nov 10.5% plus spread on market orders
Fee On CAD 500CAD 2.50 through Oct 31; CAD 4.75 from Nov 1CAD 2.50 plus the spread
With Wealthsimple's Example 1.00% SpreadNot applicable (Robinhood publishes no spread)CAD 7.50 in total
Small-Order SurchargeNone listedCAD 1 on orders under CAD 100
Lower TiersNone publishedActive Trader: 0.5% down to 0%, spread 0%

The Wealthsimple spread varies, so CAD 7.50 is an illustration from its own schedule, not a promise. Robinhood's fee schedule lists a single trading fee and does not publish a spread, so I cannot say what the quote contains. Through October 31, Robinhood's CAD 2.50 is lower than Wealthsimple's CAD 2.50 plus spread. From November 1 that flips on the headline: Robinhood's CAD 4.75 (CAD 9.50 round trip) is higher than Wealthsimple's CAD 2.50 unless Wealthsimple's spread passes about 0.45%. Against Wealthsimple's own 1.00% spread example, CAD 7.50, Robinhood is still lower. So the honest answer is that it depends on the spread you actually get. Heavy traders can climb Wealthsimple's Active Trader tiers, which are cheaper still.

Which Is Better For Funding And Withdrawing CAD?

Wealthsimple Crypto offers free Interac e-Transfer, up to CAD 10,000 per transfer or your bank's limit, and transfers from a Wealthsimple chequing account. Robinhood supports Interac e-Transfer and domestic wire. Some Reddit users report Interac delays and slow support at Robinhood, which is anecdotal.

For crypto withdrawals, Wealthsimple shows a network fee estimate before you send and has published limits of up to CAD 10,000 daily and CAD 25,000 weekly per a secondary summary of its help centre. Robinhood charges no fee of its own, needs identity verification and 2FA, can take up to 5 business days to enable transfers, and cannot send every coin. No Lightning, no bc1p addresses for Bitcoin.

Which Has More Coins?

Wealthsimple says Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana and 170+ other coins. Robinhood lists 50+, such as BTC, ETH, XRP, SOL, DOGE, ADA, AVAX, XLM, LINK, SHIB, LTC, PEPE, AAVE, BONK and WIF. Wealthsimple has roughly three times the range, according to each platform's own marketing text, since neither counts coins the same way.

Which Is Safer?

Wealthsimple Investments Inc. is a CIRO Dealer Member with a CSA decision amended on December 22, 2025, and a FINTRAC MSB registration that runs to March 2028. Robinhood's accounts sit with Coinsquare Capital Markets Ltd., a CIRO Dealer Member, and CIRO approved its change of control on May 20, 2026. Both are in the regulated tier.

Custody claims differ in detail. Wealthsimple says its custodial partners each carry over $75M of cold storage coverage, with crypto held in trust. Robinhood says crypto is held in trust with approved custodians and that it does not lend customer crypto or use it to back leveraged positions. At both, crypto is not covered by CIPF while cash is.

Which App Is Easier To Use?

Wealthsimple's app shows 4.62 on Apple Canada from about 130,000 ratings, and many Canadians already hold investments there, which keeps everything in one place. It also offers staking: up to 5% per year, with a 30% fee on rewards for Core and Premium accounts. Robinhood has staking for ETH and SOL listed as coming soon. I have no verifiable rating for Robinhood's Canadian app.

What Are The Pros And Cons Of Each?

Robinhood Pros

  • One fee per order: 0.50% through Oct 31, 2026, then 0.95%
  • No account maintenance or deposit fees
  • Easy path for Bitbuy and Coinsquare users

Robinhood Cons

  • 50+ coins
  • No staking yet
  • Fee nearly doubles on Nov 1, 2026
  • No fee tiers for heavy traders
  • Not in my top 10

Wealthsimple Pros

  • 170+ coins plus BTC, ETH and SOL
  • Staking live
  • Active Trader tiers down to 0.05% and 0% spread
  • Free Interac e-Transfer

Wealthsimple Cons

  • Spread on market orders on top of 0.5%
  • CAD 1 surcharge under CAD 100
  • Staking fee of 30% for Core and Premium

Who Should Choose Robinhood, And Who Should Choose Wealthsimple Crypto?

Choose Robinhood if you are a migrating Bitbuy or Coinsquare customer who wants one readable fee, knowing it is 0.95% from November 1. Choose Wealthsimple Crypto if you already invest there, want the larger coin list, stake, or place limit orders to dodge the spread. It sits fourth in my ranking.
