Tangem is a screenless NFC card set for people who want cheap, seedless self-custody; the Trezor Safe 7 is a screen device for people who want open firmware and more control. The honest difference: Tangem costs a fraction of the price, and Trezor gives you a display to verify every address.
Tangem Vs Trezor: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the Trezor Safe 7 is the better pick because it scores 9.6 against 9.4 on my list.

What Happens If You Lose Your Tangem Wallet Or Trezor Safe 7?
Tangem Wallet: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Seedless by design: extra cards back each other up (2 or 3 card sets); a 12-word seed is optional for advanced users. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-07-09 (Ledger Donjon laser attack on Tangem cards).
Trezor Safe 7: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 12-, 20- and 24-word backup; Advanced multi-share backup (Shamir). Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 6 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-09-09 (Brevo newsletter provider breach, phishing from Trezor's address).

Which Is More Secure, Tangem Or Trezor?
They protect your keys in very different ways, so "more secure" depends on what you are afraid of. The Trezor Safe 7 stacks three chips from three vendors: the auditable TROPIC01, an NDA-free EAL6+ Optiga secure element and an STM32U5 microcontroller. It has a 2.5 inch touchscreen, so you check every address on the device itself, and Trezor publishes its firmware and signed binaries on GitHub. Passphrase support is there, and so are 12, 20 and 24 word backups plus an advanced multi-share (Shamir) option.
Tangem has no screen and no seed phrase by default. Each card holds an EAL6+ chip (Samsung-developed, per Tangem), you buy a set of two or three, and the extra cards back each other up. The app is open source on GitHub, but Tangem does not describe the card firmware as open source. An access code or biometrics in the app protects the wallet. A passphrase is not stated on the pages I checked, so I do not count on one.
Both have a documented laser-attack disclosure, and both need the device in someone's hands. On June 3, 2026 a TROPIC01 chip attack affecting the Safe 7 was disclosed; Trezor says the PIN, funds and backup are not exposed because that chip is one of three layers, and it plans a later chip revision (Trezor's response). On July 9, 2026 Ledger's Donjon team published a laser attack on Tangem cards that needs physical possession and about $250,000 of lab gear; Donjon says the cards have no firmware update path, so it cannot be patched (Donjon write-up). Tangem also had a December 2024 bug that wrote a private key into app logs for a small group who activated with a seed phrase and emailed support from the app; Tangem says it affected under 0.1% of users and no funds were lost.
Trezor's own record includes a 2024 support portal breach, an August 2026 ShipMonk shipping data breach and a September 2026 Brevo newsletter incident. None of those touched devices or keys, but they are why Trezor will tell you it never contacts you about your backup. If an email, call or video chat asks for it, that is a scam.
Which Is Easier To Use?
Tangem wins on pure simplicity. You tap a card on your phone over NFC, there is no cable and no battery, and the app is free. You never write twelve words on paper unless you opt in to the advanced seed. That is a big deal for family members who will never keep a recovery sheet in a drawer.
The Safe 7 is more steps and more control. You set a PIN on the device, back up a phrase, and manage coins in Trezor Suite on Android, Mac, Windows and Linux, with full iOS compatibility on this model. It connects by Bluetooth, USB-C to USB-C or charges on a Qi2 pad. The colour screen and haptic feedback make address checks pleasant. I keep my ETH, SOL and XRP on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card, and the card is the one I would hand to a first-timer.
Which Supports More Coins?
Tangem lists 14,100+ assets across 90+ networks. Trezor says "1000s of coins and tokens," plus 30+ third-party wallet apps and 70k+ dApps through those apps. On raw numbers Tangem is ahead, but the counts are measured differently and I have not matched them coin by coin. Before you buy for a specific token, search the maker's own coin list. Trezor's page does not name XRP in the text I fetched, so confirm it in Trezor Suite first.
Which Costs Less In Canada?
Tangem is far cheaper. A 2-card set is USD 54.90 and a 3-card set USD 69.90; the Safe 7 is USD 249. Tangem ships to Canada with standard delivery of 4 to 11 business days at USD 16.00, free on orders over USD 100 (VAT excluded), and its prices exclude taxes and duties. Trezor's shop currency follows the delivery country, and Amazon Canada is a listed authorised reseller. The duty rate for a hardware wallet is unknown to me, so check checkout and the CBSA courier thresholds: for courier shipments from outside the US and Mexico, up to CAD 20 is duty and tax free and above that duties and taxes apply.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both are plain self-custody addresses, so any exchange that allows external withdrawals works. Coinbase asks whether the wallet is self-custody and has a "Sending to myself" checkbox. Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up on withdrawals of CAD 1,000 or more to an outside wallet. Under FINTRAC's travel rule, in force since June 1, 2021, exchanges must carry sender and recipient details on transfers of that size. Moving coins between wallets you own is not a taxable disposition per the CRA, so keep your records. See my Canadian crypto tax guide.
Which Should You Choose?
Pick Tangem if you want the lowest entry price, a card you can spread across locations and a wallet that never asks you to handle a seed phrase. Pick the Trezor Safe 7 if you want a screen, open firmware, Bluetooth and a passphrase, and you are comfortable with a more traditional setup. Read my full reviews of the Tangem Wallet and the Trezor Safe 7, or see the best crypto wallets in Canada. Trezor sits at number 1 in my top 7 and Tangem at number 2.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Tangem Really Secure?
Tangem cards use an EAL6+ chip and are audited by Riscure (2023) and Cure53 (the mobile app, March 2026, reported by Tangem). Ledger's Donjon team published a laser attack on July 9, 2026 that needs physical possession and about $250,000 of lab gear, and says the cards cannot be patched. Keep a second card in another place and use the access code.
Can A Trezor Wallet Be Hacked?
No remote hack of the Safe 7 keys is on record. Lab-style attacks exist: a June 2026 laser attack on its TROPIC01 chip needs possession and equipment, and Trezor says funds are not exposed. Use a passphrase and never type your backup anywhere.
