Uphold vs. Gate.io: What Works Better For Canadians in 2024

Oleg Galeev

Last updated September 20, 2024

Uphold and Gate.io are both recognized players in the realm of cryptocurrency exchanges. While Uphold prides itself on ease-of-use and versatility, Gate.io offers an extensive list of altcoins and trading options. However, Gate.io’s interface is often considered less beginner-friendly.

Description

Uphold is a multi-asset platform that allows you to trade more than 66 cryptocurrencies, 50 US stocks and four precious metals. You can trade crypto for stocks or stocks for crypto, instantly.

Launched in 2013, Gate.io is one of the top cryptocurrency exchanges in the world with $12 billion+ daily trading volume. However, Canada is on the list of disallowed countries under Gate.io terms same as the US and many other counties. Because of this, they can randomly block your account at any time so we WOULD NOT recommend using it. If you are looking for a similar exchange, we would recommend using Bitget instead or checking our list of the best crypto exchanges in Canada

Mobile and Desktop Trading

Both platforms have mobile and desktop applications. Uphold's mobile app is rated 4.6 stars on the Apple App Store and 4.7 stars on Google Play, with users praising its easy-to-use interface. Gate.io’s iOS app has a lower rating of 3,6 stars. Gate.io's desktop version, like its mobile counterpart, is intricate and better suited to experienced traders.

Uphold

Uphold’s app has a 3.5-star rating from 5,000 reviews on the Apple App store and a 3.2-star rating from 18,000 reviews on Google Play. Some reviewers have said the app is slow and buggy, with the verification process being particularly slow.

Uphold is easy to use for beginners. There is a quick trade option called “Anything to Anything”. All you need to do is enter the asset you want to trade, the amount, and the asset you wish to swap it for. You can trade crypto to stocks, stocks to metal etc. in just a few clicks.

Gate.io App

Gate.io’s iOS app has a 2.5-star rating from 700 reviews and a 2.5-star rating from 10,000 reviews on Google Play. It is quite low, we would recommend using a desktop app. Many reviewers have said that they cannot log in, that the 2FA does not work, you are often sent to blank pages and overall a bad user interface. We never had such issues though.

Security Compliance

To secure your Uphold account, you can enable two-factor authentication.

Uphold trading platform utilizes cold storage for your safety.

Gate.io is quite a reputable exchange. Forbes Advisor gave it a 4.5-star rating and named it one of the best crypto exchanges. Gate.io utilizes hot and cold storage to keep customer funds safe. On its website, Gate.io says it is the first exchange to invest millions in security and law funds. They also claim to be fully compliant and certain features such as futures trading is not available to Canadians because of regulationsThey can block your account at any time.

Both exchanges prioritize user security. Uphold uses 2FA and encryption while Gate.io also enables two-factor authentication and employs a combination of hot and cold storage to secure user funds. However, Gate.io's compliance with Canadian regulations can be an issue, as it has the potential to randomly block accounts from certain disallowed countries, including Canada.

Regulatory Compliance

Uphold is fully regulated in the USA. They are compliant with the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) and record keeping regulations with the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA). It's Canadian-friendly as well.

Gate.io is not compliant crypto exchange in Canada.

Uphold is globally compliant and maintains transparency about its operations, making it a reliable platform for Canadian users. On the other hand, Gate.io lists Canada as a disallowed country under its terms, which means it could block Canadian accounts at any time. This lack of clarity about compliance makes Gate.io less suitable for Canadians.

Customer support

Uphold has good reviews about their customer service teams. They offer help centres on their website and within the app.

You can contact Uphold’s customer support via their online ticketing system on their website.

There is a helpful help centre and blog on the Gate.io website which teaches you how to use their many features. They also have a live chat function and you can submit a support request when you’re logged in. Unfortunately, Gate.io has many bad reviews on Trustpilot with people complaining that they are unable to withdraw or that customer service is slow or does not respond.

Uphold offers strong support with 24/7 customer service, while Gate.io has faced criticism for slow response times and issues with withdrawals. However, Gate.io does have a helpful help center and blog, along with a live chat function.

Conclusion

While Gate.io offers a wider array of altcoins and interesting features, its user interface and compliance issues can make it a less appealing option for Canadians. Uphold, with its strong customer support, compliance transparency, and user-friendly interface, is the recommended choice for Canadian users.
