Blockstream Jade is a Bitcoin-and-Liquid wallet with fully open hardware and firmware. The Trezor Safe 7 holds thousands of coins. If you only own Bitcoin, the question is whether Jade's purity beats Trezor's chip stack. If you own XRP or Solana, the question answers itself.

Which Is More Secure, Blockstream Jade Or Trezor?

They solve key storage in opposite ways. Jade has no physical secure element. Blockstream calls its design a Virtual Secure Element: a blind oracle encrypts the key so the firmware and hardware can stay fully open source, running on an Espressif ESP32 microcontroller. The Safe 7 puts the key in a stack of three chips from three vendors, with TROPIC01 auditable, a certified EAL6+ Optiga element and an STM32U5 microcontroller, though that firmware is also published on GitHub.

Jade Plus has a camera for air-gapped QR signing, which keeps USB and Bluetooth out of the path. I could not confirm whether Jade supports a passphrase, so I am not claiming it; the Safe 7 does. Backups: Jade uses a 12 or 24 word seed with SeedQR support, and the Safe 7 offers 12, 20 or 24 words plus multi-share backup.

On record: Jade had a stack overflow in its descriptor registration (firmware 1.0.24 to 1.0.36), reported by DARKNAVY and disclosed on December 16, 2025. It needed malware on the host and an unlocked device, QR-only mode was unaffected, and it was fixed in 1.0.37 (November 13, 2025) with anti-rollback in 1.0.38 (Blockstream). Trezor's 2026 list is longer: the June 3 laser attack on TROPIC01 that Trezor says leaves funds unexposed, and customer-data breaches at a shipping provider (August 13) and a newsletter provider (September 9). Jade's record is shorter, but Trezor's is also from a much larger user base.

Which Is Easier To Use?

Jade is a small device with a 1.9 inch LCD and navigation buttons, and the Plus adds a camera. The Blockstream app runs on Android (Bluetooth and USB-C) and iOS (Bluetooth), and it also pairs with Sparrow, Electrum, Specter, Nunchuk, BlueWallet and Bitcoin Core, which is a draw for people who run their own setup. The Safe 7 has a colour touchscreen with haptic feedback and Trezor Suite on all major platforms with full iOS compatibility. Safe 7 is simpler for a beginner. Jade is better for someone who already knows what a descriptor is.

Which Supports More Coins?

Jade: Bitcoin and Liquid assets only. Trezor Safe 7: thousands of coins and tokens, 30+ third-party apps. If you hold only BTC, Jade loses nothing. If you want to hold ETH, SOL or XRP on the same device, Jade cannot. Can XRP be stored on Trezor? Yes. It is one of the coins I keep on my Safe 7.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

Blockstream's store lists Canada in CAD, with international delivery of 2 to 4 weeks. Trezor ships to over 200 countries, and Amazon Canada is an authorised reseller. Duties are not stated by either, and CBSA will charge on most overseas orders over CA$20.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

For Bitcoin, both are plain: withdraw to your receive address. Bull Bitcoin and Bitcoin Well pay out straight to your own wallet, and Bull Bitcoin lists no fee for an on-chain payout (minimum 0.001 BTC), which suits Jade. On Coinbase or Kraken you will see the Travel Rule prompt for CA$1,000 or more. Withdrawing to your own wallet is not a taxable disposition, per the CRA.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Jade if you only hold Bitcoin, you want auditable open hardware and firmware, you like air-gapped QR signing and you use Sparrow or a similar app. Choose the Trezor Safe 7 if you hold anything besides BTC, want a touchscreen and want one device to cover the lot. Note that Jade has no Canadian reseller listed in my sources, so you buy direct from Blockstream, which is also what the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre recommends for any hardware wallet. Whichever you pick, send a small test amount first and keep the seed backup offline.
