Which Is More Secure, Coldcard Q Or Jade Plus?

The Q's hardware spec is strong: dual secure elements (a Microchip ATECC608 and a Maxim DS28C36B) plus the main processor, and the ability to block USB and NFC data permanently. The Jade Plus has no physical secure element. It uses Blockstream's 'Virtual Secure Element' based on blind oracle encryption on an Espressif ESP32, so firmware and hardware can be fully open source. That is a philosophical trade: more chips against more openness.

The seed bug rendered the Q's chips moot. Coinkite says the devices were not hacked and that the weak seeds were the problem. Seeds made on Mk4, Mk5 or Q firmware before 5.6.0 / 1.5.0Q (Mk2 and Mk3: firmware 4.0.1 to 4.1.9) are at risk unless 50 or more private dice rolls or a strong passphrase went into them. Galaxy Research later counted more than 1,596 BTC taken from about 7,300 addresses, and CoinDesk reported a Toronto victim among them. Fixed firmware shipped on July 30 and 31, but anyone with an affected seed has to generate a new one on a different device and move the coins. Estimates of the total vary by outlet and date. Firmware 1.5.1Q, released August 20, now requires user-added entropy when making a seed (65 key presses, 50 dice rolls or 128 coin flips), which is a sensible fix, but it comes after the damage (Coinkite).

The Jade's record is shorter: a stack overflow in the descriptor-registration call, disclosed December 16, 2025, affecting firmware 1.0.24 to 1.0.36, needing malware on the connected host and an unlocked device. QR-only mode was unaffected and the fix landed in 1.0.37 (Blockstream).

Which Is Easier To Use?

The Jade Plus is a 30 g metal device with a 1.9 inch IPS screen at 320 x 170, navigation buttons, a 640 x 480 camera for QR scanning, a built-in battery, USB-C and Bluetooth, and an SD card or USB drive option through JadeLink. SeedQR is supported for backup. The Coldcard Q is bigger, with a 3.2 inch 320 x 240 screen, a full keyboard, a QR scanner with LED illumination, two microSD slots, NFC and USB-C, powered by three AAA cells or USB-C. If you type long passphrases, the Q's keyboard is a joy. If you want an app, the Jade has one, and the Q does not.

Which Supports More Coins?

Bitcoin on both. The Jade Plus also handles Liquid assets. Neither is a place for Ethereum or XRP. What is the best cold wallet to buy for XRP? It is not either of these. I hold my XRP on a Trezor Safe 7, and I would check XRP support on the maker's list for any wallet you consider.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

The Jade Plus costs roughly half. Duties are not stated by either store, so allow for courier tax. The plain Jade Core at USD 99 loses the camera and battery, which is the part that makes the Plus useful as an air-gapped signer.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Both are Bitcoin-only receiving addresses. Bull Bitcoin pays out to your own wallet on-chain, over Lightning or on Liquid with no payout fee, and Bitcoin Well delivers straight to your wallet. Which Should You Choose?

Is Coldcard the best Bitcoin wallet? Not any more, in my view, and Is Coldcard better than Ledger? I would not say so now either. Choose the Jade Plus if you want an open-source Bitcoin signer with a camera for air-gapped QR signing. If you already own a Coldcard Q, check your firmware's seed window and move funds to a new seed if you are affected.
