Coldcard was once the default Bitcoin-only pick, but since July 2026 I cannot recommend it, while Tangem is a low-cost seedless card with its own lab-attack disclosure. The honest one-line difference: Coldcard's flaw was remote and cost real money, Tangem's needs the thief to hold your card.

Coldcard Vs Tangem: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, the Tangem Wallet is the better pick because it is in my top 7. I cannot recommend Coldcard after its security issues. My #1 pick is the Trezor Safe 7.

What Happens If You Lose Your Coldcard Q Or Tangem Wallet?

Coldcard Q: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: microSD or paper BIP-39; Seed XOR bundle sold; passphrase backup planning guide on site. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 16 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-20 (Follow-up security fixes in 5.6.1 and 1.5.1Q). I no longer recommend this wallet: create a new seed on a different device and move your coins.

Tangem Wallet: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Seedless by design: extra cards back each other up (2 or 3 card sets); a 12-word seed is optional for advanced users. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-07-09 (Ledger Donjon laser attack on Tangem cards).

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

I cannot recommend Coldcard right now, so this page is a different kind of comparison. I tested the Coldcard Q and it is a serious piece of Bitcoin-only hardware. But on July 30, 2026 Coinkite disclosed a seed-generation flaw that led to the theft of more than 100 million dollars, and a wallet that cannot be trusted to make a safe seed fails the one test that matters. There is no buy link for Coldcard on this site.

What Happened To Coldcard In July 2026?

A build error dating back to 2021 made Coldcard devices generate seeds from a weak software random number generator instead of the hardware one, leaving roughly 72 bits of entropy. Attackers recreated those keys offline and drained wallets. The first wave took 594 BTC (about $38M) from roughly 500 wallets in 25 minutes. Galaxy Research later put the total above 1,596 BTC from about 7,300 addresses, and CoinDesk reported that a Toronto victim lost 18.25 BTC. Estimates vary by outlet and date (Coinkite advisory, CoinDesk).

Coinkite says the devices were not hacked. It released fixed firmware on July 30 and 31, halted shipments and destroyed its remaining vulnerable inventory. But updating does not repair a seed that already exists. Seeds made on Mk2/Mk3 firmware 4.0.1 to 4.1.9, or on Mk4, Mk5 or Q firmware before 5.6.0 and 1.5.0Q, are at risk unless the owner used 50 or more private dice rolls or a strong passphrase. Those owners need a new seed on a different device and a transfer of their coins. I found no compensation programme as of October 3, 2026.

Which Is More Secure, Coldcard Or Tangem?

Look at what each device was designed to protect. The Coldcard Q has dual secure elements from different vendors (a Microchip ATECC608 and a Maxim DS28C36B) plus the main processor, a QR scanner, microSD and the ability to block USB and NFC permanently. That is a thoughtful design, and it was undone by the seed-creation step upstream of all of it.

Tangem's card uses an EAL6+ chip and is seedless by default: extra cards back each other up. It had its own public problem this year. On July 9, 2026 Ledger Donjon published a laser attack that sets the card's access password to a value of the attacker's choosing, needs physical possession and about $250,000 of lab equipment and, per Donjon, cannot be patched because cards have no update path (Ledger Donjon's write-up). Tangem also had a minor app-logging issue in late 2024 that touched under 0.1% of users. Tangem has Riscure (2023) and Cure53 (2026) audits.

The two failures differ in kind. Tangem's needs the thief to hold your card. Coldcard's was exploited remotely, at scale, against people who had never lost a device. I weigh the second far more heavily.

Which Is Easier To Use?

Not a close call. The Coldcard Q has a 3.2 inch LCD, a QWERTY keyboard and a QR scanner, and it works with Bitcoin wallets over QR, NFC, microSD or USB (PSBT), with no vendor app. It is for people who like to control every step. Tangem is a card you tap to a phone with a free app. Coldcard rewards patience, Tangem rewards impatience. After the August 20 firmware (5.6.1 and 1.5.1Q), a new Coldcard seed also needs user-added entropy: 65 key presses, 50 dice rolls or 128 coin flips.

Which Supports More Coins?

Coldcard Q is Bitcoin only. Tangem lists 14,100+ assets across 90+ networks. Can you lose XRP in a cold wallet? You cannot hold it on the Q at all, and on Tangem you lose it only if you lose every card in your set with no seed. I keep my own ETH, SOL and XRP on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card.

Coinkite is a Canadian company, which once made Coldcard the natural pick for Canadians. I would not buy a new one until a fuller post-mortem and independent review exist; Coinkite promised one and I had not found it as of October 3.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Tangem works like any self-custody wallet: withdraw from Coinbase, Kraken or NDAX, confirm the Travel Rule prompt for CA$1,000 or more, send a test. If you already hold Bitcoin on a Coldcard made before the fixes, do not wait: generate a new seed on a different device, send a small test, then move the rest. Moving coins between your own wallets is not a disposition for the CRA, so migrating costs you only network fees. Keep records for six years.

Which Should You Choose?

If you own a Coldcard, check the firmware version your seed was created on today, and if it falls in the affected range, migrate. If you are buying new and want Bitcoin only, look at a Trezor Safe 3 Bitcoin-only edition, the Blockstream Jade or Bitkey. If you want a card, buy Tangem, with the caveat above. My top pick today is the Trezor Safe 7.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Crypto Cold Wallet Is The Best?

For most Canadians I would start with the Trezor Safe 7, then Tangem. I cannot recommend Coldcard after the July 2026 seed-generation theft.

Can I Lose My XRP In A Cold Wallet?

You can if you lose the device and the backup. Coldcard cannot hold XRP at all. Tangem can, and you lose it only if you lose every card in your set with no seed.

Is The Tangem Wallet Good?

Yes for most people. It has an EAL6+ chip, audits and a low price. Ledger Donjon showed a lab laser attack in July 2026 that needs physical possession and cannot be patched.

What Is A Cold Wallet?

A cold wallet keeps your private keys off an internet-connected device, usually on a dedicated chip. You sign transactions on the wallet itself, and only the signed result touches your computer or phone.

Is My Coldcard Seed At Risk?

If it was made on Mk2/Mk3 firmware 4.0.1 to 4.1.9, or on Mk4, Mk5 or Q firmware before 5.6.0 and 1.5.0Q, without 50 or more dice rolls or a strong passphrase, yes. Make a new seed on a different device and move your coins.

Which Is Cheaper, The Coldcard Q Or The Tangem Wallet?

Coldcard Q: USD 319 sale (USD 369 list) on the Coinkite store snapshot dated 2025-09-10, so confirm current price. Tangem Wallet: 2-card set USD 54.90; 3-card set USD 69.90; Family Pack USD 129.80; Ring and 2 cards USD 160; Pro Kit USD 180 (prices shown in USD to a US visitor).

Do The Coldcard Q And The Tangem Wallet Ship To Canada?

Coldcard Q: Canada shipping not stated. Tangem Wallet: yes: Canada listed with Standard delivery 4-11 business days, USD 16.00 shipping; free standard shipping on orders over USD 100 (VAT excluded).
