Cypherock splits one key across a Vault and four cards, while Tangem puts a full copy of the key on each card in a set. Tangem is simpler and ships to Canada with a clear price. Cypherock's price, coin count and Canadian terms were not published where I could check.

What Happens If You Lose Your Cypherock X1 Or Tangem Wallet?

Cypherock X1: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: no seed phrase backups: Shamir split across X1 Vault and four X1 Cards; also BIP39 compatible with distributed entropy. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 1 security issue is on record for the maker, the latest on 2025-11-21 (DARKNAVY USB and firmware tampering research).

Tangem Wallet: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Seedless by design: extra cards back each other up (2 or 3 card sets); a 12-word seed is optional for advanced users. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-07-09 (Ledger Donjon laser attack on Tangem cards).

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

Which Is More Secure, Cypherock Or Tangem?

These two share one trait: neither relies on a single 24-word seed written on paper. How they get there is very different. The Cypherock X1 is a set: one X1 Vault plus four X1 Cards, with the key split into five parts using Shamir's Secret Sharing across them. The cards are NFC smartcards with EAL6+ secure elements and the Vault has a dual-chip design. Cypherock says it is open source with secure element and also BIP39 compatible with distributed entropy. Tangem sells two- or three-card sets of EAL6+ chips where each card is a full copy and backs up the others.

In plain terms: Cypherock makes you split trust across five pieces, so losing one or two pieces is survivable and stealing one piece is not enough. Tangem copies the same key onto each card, so stealing one card is stealing the wallet's key, protected only by the access code. That is the structural reason the Donjon laser attack matters for Tangem: it cracks the single card.

The record. Cypherock: in November 2025 researchers at DARKNAVY published a demonstration of a tampered X1 that could control new seed generation, after reporting two USB vulnerabilities in March 2025. It was a simulated supply-chain attack and no customer incidents were reported. DARKNAVY says Cypherock pushed patches to GitHub without acknowledging the report. That is the researchers' account, and I did not find Cypherock's reply (DARKNAVY write-up). Tangem: Ledger Donjon's July 9, 2026 laser attack (needs the card plus about $250,000 of gear, cannot be patched) and a fixed December 2024 app-logging bug. Tangem also has audits from Riscure (December 2, 2023) and Cure53 (March 1, 2026); I did not confirm a Cypherock audit on a fetched primary page.

Which Is Easier To Use?

Tangem is easier, and it is not close. One card, one tap, a free mobile app. Cypherock needs the Vault and a card tapped together, with the cySync app, and five pieces to store in separate places. That is more work, and most people who skip the second part end up with five pieces in one drawer, which defeats the design. On connection details and the display, Cypherock's pages do not say, so I will not describe the screen or how the Vault links to the app.

I will not give you a Cypherock coin count because I could not source one. Ask before you buy if you hold anything outside Bitcoin and Ethereum.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

Tangem is a clear-cut: a 2-card set is $54.90 and a 3-card set $69.90 in USD, with Canada delivery at 4-11 business days for $16.00 (free over $100) and customs fees possible on delivery. Cypherock's price, Canadian shipping and duty terms were not on the pages I could fetch, so check shop.cypherock.com at checkout. The CBSA courier rule is the same for both: duty free up to CAD 20 on non-US parcels and CAD 40 on US ones. Buy Tangem through my link, 10% off with my code OCRYPTOCANADA and Cypherock from the maker's site. Buying from the maker is also what the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre advises.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Receive addresses come from each app. Newton requires an Address Book entry verified by MFA before it sends. NDAX shows a Travel Rule prompt above CAD 1,000, and "Sending to myself" skips extra questions. Moves between your own wallets are not dispositions to the CRA, as long as you keep records for at least six years.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Tangem if you want the simplest way into self-custody that ships to Canada, with a published audit trail. I use a Tangem card myself alongside a Trezor Safe 7. Choose Cypherock if you are comfortable managing five physical pieces and want a split-key design, and you are willing to wait for answers on price, coins and Canadian shipping. Neither is a replacement for a screened device: see Cypherock vs Trezor, my Cypherock X1 review and the best crypto wallets in Canada.

What Has Happened With Cypherock And Tangem?

  • : Ledger Donjon published a laser attack on Tangem cards, disclosed to Tangem on February 10, 2026.
  • : Cure53 completed an independent audit of the Tangem Mobile Wallet, reported by Tangem.
  • : DARKNAVY published research showing a tampered Cypherock X1 could control new seed generation.
