D'CENT's Biometric is a cheap fingerprint-unlock wallet; the Ledger Flex is a polished E Ink device sold through Canadian retailers. The honest difference right now: D'CENT has an open September 2026 App Wallet incident and no Canadian duty coverage.

D'CENT Vs Ledger: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, the Ledger Flex is the better pick because it scores 9.2 against 8.4 on my list.

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

Which Is More Secure, D'CENT Or Ledger?

Start with the news, because it decides this one for many readers. On September 16, 2026 D'CENT reported unauthorized asset transfers from its App Wallet, including hardware-wallet seeds that had ever been restored into that app, across Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRPL, TRON and EVM chains. D'CENT told users to update, create new recovery phrases and move assets, says it is working with law enforcement and has withheld technical details; the cause was not yet public when I checked, and no loss figure was stated (DCENT incident report). If you ever restored a D'CENT device seed into the phone app, treat that seed as exposed.

On the hardware itself, the D'CENT Biometric uses a CC EAL5+ secure chip with a fingerprint sensor (up to 2 fingerprints, or a 4 to 8 digit PIN). The Ledger Flex uses an ST33K1M5 secure element at the higher EAL6+ level. Ledger does not claim fully open-source firmware, and D'CENT does not state whether its code is open, so neither side gets an openness point.

Ledger has its own history: a 2020 marketing database leak, the 2023 Recover controversy, a December 2023 Connect Kit supply-chain attack on dApp users, and Donjon security bulletins 023 to 025 disclosed on August 27, 2026 about signing-review bypasses with a malicious host. Ledger reports no evidence of exploitation against users. Seed theft from the hardware was not part of any of those.

Which Is Easier To Use?

D'CENT's selling point is the fingerprint: tap to unlock, no PIN typing in public. You generate the 24 recovery words on the device, and a passphrase adds one secret word on top. Connectivity is Bluetooth Low Energy 4.1 and USB-C, and the DCENT app is the companion.

The Flex has a 2.8 inch E Ink touchscreen, anti-glare and readable outdoors, with Bluetooth 5.2, NFC and USB-C. The Ledger Wallet app runs on iOS, Android and desktop. It also ships with a Ledger Recovery Key (NFC) now, which is a nicer fallback than a bare sheet of paper. I would call the Ledger app the more polished daily experience, and D'CENT the more compact, button-driven one.

Which Supports More Coins?

D'CENT lists 10,000+ assets across 100+ blockchains and lets you add custom token accounts by hand. Ledger lists 500+ coins directly in the Ledger Wallet app, including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP and stablecoins, with thousands more through third-party wallets. For XRP specifically, Ledger names it on the Flex page. D'CENT's incident report mentions XRPL, but I did not find an XRP line on its product page, so check before you buy. The big number favours D'CENT; the first-party support list favours Ledger.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

This is where the paths split. Ledger's Canadian storefront shows the Flex at CA$369 (USD 249), free shipping, and authorised resellers include Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada and Amazon Canada. D'CENT's store showed the Biometric at USD 79, a 50% sale off USD 159, on October 3, 2026. But the store lists duty coverage for the US, UK and EU and Japan, and says Canada is "coming soon." Canadian buyers pay shipping and may owe import tax. Per the CBSA, a courier parcel from outside the US and Mexico is only duty and tax free up to CAD 20; the exact rate for a wallet is unknown.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Both give you a normal receiving address. On NDAX, a withdrawal above CAD 1,000 triggers a "Who are you sending to?" travel-rule prompt, and "Sending to myself" needs nothing extra. On Newton, the address must first be saved and verified in the Address Book with MFA. Wealthsimple supports external wallet withdrawals after a selfie ID check. Sending between wallets you own is not a taxable disposition per the CRA.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose the Ledger Flex if you want a well-supported wallet you can buy from a Canadian retailer today, with a real E Ink screen and the XRP line in writing. Choose D'CENT only if you value fingerprint unlock, never restored a seed into its app, and accept the duty uncertainty and the open incident. Both are in my top 7: Ledger Flex is number 3 and D'CENT Biometric number 7. Read the Ledger Flex and the D'CENT Biometric Wallet, or see the best crypto wallets in Canada.

What Has Happened With D'CENT And Ledger?

  • D'CENT reports unauthorized asset transfers from its App Wallet and tells users to create new recovery phrases.
  • Ledger discloses Security Bulletins 023, 024 and 025 on signing-review bypasses; apps were hardened from August 13.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is DCENT A Good Cold Wallet?

The hardware has a CC EAL5+ chip, a fingerprint sensor and 10,000+ assets. But on September 16, 2026 D'CENT reported unauthorized transfers from its App Wallet, and its store lists Canada duty coverage as coming soon. I would buy something else until the cause is published.

What Is The Most Trusted Cold Wallet?

There is no single answer. My top 7 starts with the Trezor Safe 7, Tangem and the Ledger Flex. Trust depends on open code, a screen you can verify and how the maker handles incidents.

Which Wallet Is Best For XRP?

Ledger names XRP on the Flex product page. D'CENT's report mentions XRPL, but I did not find an XRP line on its product page. Check the maker's coin list before you buy.

What Are The Top 3 Crypto Wallets?

In my ranking: Trezor Safe 7, Tangem, then the Ledger Flex. D'CENT Biometric is number 7.

Can Canadians Buy D'CENT Or Ledger?

Ledger sells to Canada with CA$ pricing and Canadian resellers. D'CENT's store lists Canada as coming soon for duty coverage, so Canadians pay shipping and may owe import tax.
