SeedSigner is a free, open-source Raspberry Pi signer; Coldcard Q is a premium Bitcoin-only device that I can no longer recommend after July 2026. The honest difference: SeedSigner is cheap and stateless with no secure element, and the Coldcard failure was in its random number generation.
SeedSigner Vs Coldcard: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the SeedSigner is the better pick because Coldcard Q is not one I recommend. My #1 wallet pick overall is the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10). I cannot recommend Coldcard after its security issues. My #1 pick is the Trezor Safe 7.
What Happens If You Lose Your SeedSigner Or Coldcard Q?
SeedSigner: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: BIP-39 12/24 words; SeedQR; seed from dice rolls or photo entropy; BIP-85 child seeds. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app.
Coldcard Q: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: microSD or paper BIP-39; Seed XOR bundle sold; passphrase backup planning guide on site. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 16 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-20 (Follow-up security fixes in 5.6.1 and 1.5.1Q). I no longer recommend this wallet: create a new seed on a different device and move your coins.

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.
I can no longer recommend Coldcard. On July 30, 2026 Coinkite disclosed that a build error dating back to 2021 made Coldcard devices generate seeds from a weak software random number generator instead of the hardware one. Attackers recreated those keys offline and drained wallets: Galaxy Research counted more than 1,596 BTC stolen from about 7,300 addresses within weeks, and CoinDesk reported a Toronto victim among them. What Is The Real Difference Between SeedSigner And Coldcard?
Both are Bitcoin-only and both sign offline, which is why people compare them. After that they are opposites. SeedSigner is a free, open-source DIY project: a Raspberry Pi Zero 1.3 with a camera and a small colour LCD HAT with joystick and buttons, running a minimal custom Linux image. Parts cost less than USD 50 and there is no official store. Coldcard Q is Coinkite's boxed flagship: 3.2 inch screen, QWERTY keyboard, QR scanner, NFC, two microSD slots, and dual secure elements (Microchip ATECC608 and Maxim DS28C36B) beside the main processor.
Which Is More Secure, SeedSigner Or Coldcard?
Different bets. SeedSigner has no secure element at all. It is stateless and air-gapped: no WiFi or Bluetooth hardware on the Pi Zero 1.3, keys are not stored on the device, and you enter or scan your seed each time you sign. It is fully FOSS (MIT licence) with reproducible builds from v0.7.0, current release 0.8.7. It lets you make a seed from dice rolls or photo entropy and supports BIP-39 12 or 24 words, SeedQR, BIP-85 child seeds and a BIP-39 passphrase. The honest weakness: with no secure element, anyone who steals the device and finds a seed written on paper next to it has the coins, and a hostile build of the software would be on you to catch.
Coldcard's hardware is far stronger than SeedSigner's on paper, and it is one of the best-documented devices in Bitcoin, which is why its failure matters. The July 2026 flaw affected seeds made on Mk2/Mk3 firmware 4.0.1 to 4.1.9, and on Mk4, Mk5 or Q firmware before 5.6.0 / 1.5.0Q, without 50 or more dice rolls or a strong passphrase. Coinkite says the devices were not hacked and released fixed firmware on July 30 and 31, but updating does not repair a seed that already exists. If your seed was made that way, create a new seed on a different device and move your coins now. Firmware 5.6.1 / 1.5.1Q on August 20, 2026 now requires user-added entropy when making a seed (65 key presses, 50 dice rolls or 128 coin flips). Coinkite promised a fuller post-mortem; I found none as of October 3, 2026.
That contrast is the lesson. SeedSigner's risk is that the user supplies the randomness; Coldcard's was that the maker supplied bad randomness. Neither wallet makes you safe if the seed generation is wrong. If you use SeedSigner, roll dice and verify the seed you generate with a second tool.
Which Is Easier To Use?
Coldcard Q, if you are an experienced user. Real buttons, a keyboard that makes a long passphrase tolerable, and tap-to-sign over NFC. It has no vendor app; it works with Bitcoin wallets over QR, NFC, microSD or USB (PSBT).
SeedSigner is a build-it-yourself weekend: you source the parts, flash an image and verify it. After that it talks over QR to Sparrow, Specter Desktop, BlueWallet, Nunchuk, Keeper, Bull Wallet and any QR-capable Bitcoin wallet. It is not a product to hand to a relative.
Which Supports More Coins?
Neither: both are Bitcoin only. SeedSigner supports mainnet, testnet and regtest. Coldcard Q is a Bitcoin-only device with signing, PSBT and PushTX. If you hold Ethereum, Solana or XRP, neither is for you, and you want a multi-coin wallet from my best crypto wallets in Canada list.
Which Costs Less In Canada?
SeedSigner, easily: under USD 50 of parts, sourced locally, so there are no duties on a shipped wallet, though each part you import from outside Canada follows the CBSA courier rules (CAD 20 duty free from outside the US and Mexico). Coldcard Q was USD 319 on sale (USD 369 list) in a Coinkite store snapshot dated September 10, 2025, so confirm any current price. Coinkite is Canada-based, but I could not confirm its shipping countries. I do not link to a store for Coldcard.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Both are Bitcoin addresses you generate yourself, so you can withdraw from any Canadian exchange that allows it. Bull Bitcoin sends straight to your own wallet, on-chain, by Lightning or Liquid with no fee, and Bitcoin Well delivers to your wallet with no withdrawal fees. Wealthsimple allows external withdrawals after a selfie check. FINTRAC's travel rule has applied since June 1, 2021. Moving coins between wallets you own is not a disposition per the CRA. If you are migrating off a Coldcard seed, that move is not taxable, but keep records; see crypto taxation in Canada.
Which Should You Choose?
If your seed came from a Coldcard before the fixed firmware, migrate first and decide later. For a new build, SeedSigner is a legitimate low-cost air-gapped signer for technical Bitcoiners who will generate their own entropy. For everyone else, I point to the multi-coin and Bitcoin-capable picks in my top 7, starting with the Trezor Safe 7. Reviews: SeedSigner and Coldcard Q.
Coinkite ships Mk4/Mk5 5.6.1 and Q 1.5.1Q, which require user-added entropy when making a seed.
Coinkite releases fixed firmware for every Coldcard model across July 30 and 31.

Frequently Asked Questions
What Is The Difference Between SeedSigner And Coldcard?
SeedSigner is a free open-source DIY signer on a Raspberry Pi Zero with no secure element; Coldcard Q is a boxed Coinkite device with dual secure elements. Both are Bitcoin only. I can no longer recommend Coldcard after the July 2026 seed-generation flaw.
Is Coldcard Still Safe To Use?
Only if the seed was made on fixed firmware or with 50 or more dice rolls. Seeds made on affected firmware are at risk and updating does not repair them. Create a new seed on a different device and move your coins.
Is SeedSigner Safe?
It is stateless, air-gapped and fully open source, but it has no secure element, so physical access plus a paper seed means loss. Make your seed with dice rolls and verify the software you flash.
Can I Move My Coldcard Coins Without Tax?
Moving coins between wallets you own is not a taxable disposition per the CRA, but keep records of the transfer for at least six years.
Does SeedSigner Work With Canadian Exchanges?
Yes. It is just a Bitcoin signer: withdraw from your exchange to an address from your SeedSigner wallet, with the usual travel-rule prompts at CAD 1,000 or more.
