ZenGo removes the seed phrase with MPC and 3-factor recovery, but it is phone only. Exodus has desktop apps, built-in swaps and hardware pairing, but you own the recovery phrase. Both are softer than a hardware device.
ZenGo Vs Exodus: Which Is Better For Canadians?
For most Canadians, the ZenGo is the better pick because it scores 7.0 against 6.8 on my list. My #1 wallet pick overall is the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10).

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.
Which Is More Secure, ZenGo Or Exodus?
Neither is hardware, so neither gets a secure element. The difference is where the key lives. ZenGo is a multi-party computation (MPC) wallet: the key is split so no single device holds a full copy, and there is no seed phrase to lose or leak. Recovery uses a 3-factor process (3FA) that works even on a new phone, and the app locks with face biometrics. ZenGo calls its MPC cryptography "award-winning open-source", though it does not say the app itself is open. Exodus is a conventional seed-phrase wallet with passkey protection, and the site says you store your own recovery phrase and that losing it can mean losing keys.
No seed phrase removes the single biggest user risk (a phrase typed into a phishing page or photographed), but it makes you depend on ZenGo's recovery flow instead. A seed-phrase wallet depends on you. Pick your failure mode.
The records are thin on both sides. I found no security incident for either on a primary page, and no confirmed audit: ZenGo audit leads (Kudelski, CertiK) were not confirmed, and a fake Exodus app on Apple's App Store was a third-party scam I could not confirm, so I do not list it. Absence of evidence is not evidence of safety, and a software wallet on a phone or laptop will always be softer than a device with its own chip.
Which Is Easier To Use?
ZenGo is simpler to start: a phone app (iOS and Android only), face login, no words to copy. It also sells a business product. Exodus is the more full-featured: desktop and mobile apps, in-app swaps from a 0.5% rate with third-party fees on top, Exodus Pay and the Exodus Card, and the ability to pair with Ledger or Trezor hardware. If you want a laptop app, only Exodus offers one.

The Exodus number is a claim I cannot verify, and it counts assets you should never touch. ZenGo's 1,000+ is the more modest figure and covers the majors.
A Canadian angle that applies to both: if you buy on an exchange and withdraw to a self-custody app, you are now your own bank, and I found no customer-protection scheme mentioned on either app's pages if something goes wrong. Exchanges such as Coinbase ask whether you are sending to yourself or someone else because of FINTRAC's travel rule, so answer honestly. For a small spending balance either app is fine. For savings, the only place I would put a long-term position is on a device, and my own ETH, SOL and XRP sit on a Trezor Safe 7 and a Tangem card, not in an app.
One practical test before you commit: install the app, send a tiny amount from an exchange, then restore the wallet on a second device (ZenGo through 3FA, Exodus through the phrase). If the recovery does not work in a quiet hour, it will not work in a bad one.
Which Costs Less In Canada?
Both apps are free to download. ZenGo's optional paid features were not captured in my facts, and Exodus swaps cost from a 0.5% rate plus third-party fees. Neither page I fetched checked Canadian availability, so confirm it in your app store. Official sites: ZenGo (my link) and exodus.com. See my ZenGo review and Exodus review for Canadians.
How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
You send from the exchange to the address inside each app. Coinbase asks whether it is self-custody and offers a "Sending to myself" box. Kraken shows a Travel Rule pop-up from CAD 1,000, and Wealthsimple's daily external limit is up to CAD 10,000. Moving crypto to wallets you own is not a taxable disposition for the CRA, but swaps inside Exodus are trades and need records kept for six years. See my crypto tax guide.
Which Should You Choose?
Choose ZenGo if you are afraid of losing or leaking a seed phrase and use a phone. Choose Exodus if you want a desktop app, built-in swaps and the option to sign with a Ledger or Trezor. Neither should hold your savings. For anything large, a device wins; start at Exodus vs Trezor or the best crypto wallets in Canada.
What Has Happened With ZenGo And Exodus?
: FINTRAC's travel rule came into force: Canadian money services businesses must pass originator and beneficiary information on crypto transfers, which is why exchanges ask who owns the receiving wallet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Zengo Safe And Legit?
I found no incident or confirmed audit on a primary page. ZenGo uses MPC with no seed phrase, which removes seed-phrase theft but relies on its recovery process.
Can Exodus Wallet Be Trusted?
Exodus Movement, Inc. is a US company listed on the NYSE and has operated since 2015. I could not confirm an audit, so keep large holdings on hardware.
What's The Most Trusted Crypto Wallet?
For savings I trust a hardware wallet. My top pick is the Trezor Safe 7, and the full ranking is on the best crypto wallets in Canada page.
Can I Withdraw From Zengo?
ZenGo is a self-custody app, so you send crypto to another address from inside it. I did not verify its fee structure on an official page.
Do I Owe Tax When Moving Crypto Between My Own Wallets?
No, not for the transfer itself. The CRA says transfers between wallets you own are not a taxable disposition, but swaps are, and records are kept for six years.
Which Is Cheaper, The ZenGo Or The Exodus?
ZenGo: free app download (software wallet); optional paid features not captured. Exodus: free software wallet; swaps from 0.5% rate, third-party fees apply.
Do The ZenGo And The Exodus Ship To Canada?
ZenGo: not applicable: app download; Canadian availability not checked. Exodus: not applicable: software download; Canadian availability not checked.
