How Can You Check That Bitcoin Well Is Registered?
Do not take my word for it. These are the official registers, with what they showed for Bitcoin Well when I checked them for this review.
| Register | Result | Verify |
|---|---|---|
| CSA list of authorized crypto platforms | Not listed | Check the CSA list |
| CIRO dealer member | No | Check CIRO’s list |
| FINTRAC money services business | Registered, M19811620 | Search FINTRAC’s registry |
Is Bitcoin Well Legit And Safe For Canadians?
Bitcoin Well Canada Ltd. is registered with FINTRAC as a money services business, and the registry showed it as registered when we checked on 2026-10-01. It is not on the CSA list of authorized crypto platforms and is not on the banned list. Its parent company is publicly traded on the TSX Venture Exchange, which means it files public financial disclosures that most private crypto companies never publish.

I have been testing Canadian crypto exchanges since 2016 and the custody question is the first thing I ask about any platform. On most exchanges, when you buy Bitcoin, it sits on the exchange's servers until you withdraw it. If the exchange is hacked, goes insolvent, or freezes your account, your Bitcoin is at risk. Bitcoin Well operates differently: the moment your payment clears, Bitcoin is sent to the wallet address you registered. The platform never touches it on your behalf.
The public company structure adds a layer of transparency that private crypto companies cannot match. As a TSX Venture Exchange-listed company, Bitcoin Well files financial results and discloses material changes through press releases, and it is subject to securities rules that require honest reporting. You can read the company's own numbers instead of taking its word for it. Most Canadian crypto platforms offer none of that.
One honest limit. A public listing and a FINTRAC registration are not the same as CSA authorization. Bitcoin Well is not on the CSA list of authorized platforms, so the investor protections that come with CSA-registered dealers do not apply. The non-custodial design is what keeps that gap small: there is no pile of customer coins sitting on the platform for anyone to lose.
The same rule applies as with Bull Bitcoin: self-custody removes the exchange risk and puts the wallet risk on you. See our guide to the best crypto wallets for Canadians before you buy a meaningful amount.
What Is Bitcoin Well's Track Record In Canada?
Bitcoin Well was founded in 2013 in Edmonton by Adam O'Brien, which makes it one of Canada's oldest Bitcoin companies. It launched Alberta's first Bitcoin ATM in 2014 and listed on the TSX Venture Exchange on July 30, 2021. Today it runs 160+ ATMs and an online portal for Canadian buyers.
Bitcoin Well Key Milestones
| Year | Milestone |
|---|---|
| 2013 | Founded in Edmonton, Alberta by Adam O'Brien |
| 2014 | Launches Alberta's first Bitcoin ATM |
| 2019 | Bitcoin Well Canada Ltd. receives its FINTRAC money services business registration (initial approval December 9, 2019) |
| 2021 | Listed on the TSX Venture Exchange (TSX.V: BTCW) on July 30 |
| 2026 | Rates page shows 1.5% buy and 2.0% sell spreads for verified accounts, 4.0% for Lite Accounts |
Thirteen years in business is a record I take seriously after watching other platforms come and go since 2016. It does not guarantee the next thirteen, but a company that has operated through multiple market cycles, exchange collapses and regulatory crackdowns has earned a longer look than a platform that launched last year.
What Does Bitcoin Well Cost?
Pricing is a spread, not a commission. On the online portal, a verified account pays a 1.5% spread to buy and a 2.0% spread to sell, so a buy and an immediate sell costs about 3.5%. A Lite Account pays 4.0% to buy and sell. Those spreads do not apply to ATM or OTC transactions, which are priced separately, and ATM fees are shown before you confirm. The rates page says there are no withdrawal, account or hidden fees.
| Activity | Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Buy Bitcoin (Online Portal, Verified) | 1.5% spread | Interac e-Transfer funding |
| Sell Bitcoin (Online Portal, Verified) | 2.0% spread | Funds go to your bank, no withdrawal fee |
| Buy Or Sell (Lite Account) | 4.0% spread | Cash Voucher funding |
| Bitcoin ATM | Shown at the machine | Priced separately from the portal spreads |
| Withdrawal, Account Or Hidden Fees | None stated | Per the official rates page |
| Bitcoin Well Infinite ($50,000+) | Priced separately | Not covered by the portal spreads |
What A Real Transaction Costs
I bought $100 of bitcoin on the online portal via Interac. At a 1.5% spread I paid $1.50 in cost and received $98.50 worth of bitcoin. No deposit fee, no network fee on my end (Bitcoin Well covers mining fees on their outgoing transactions for standard purchases). For a buy-and-hold user who rarely sells, the 1.5% buy spread is the only cost. Compare this to Shakepay, which targets a spread of 0.5% to 2.0% over its benchmark price, and Bitcoin Well's online pricing sits in the competitive range for a non-custodial Bitcoin service. If you are trading large amounts frequently, NDAX at a flat 0.20% is meaningfully cheaper.
How Does Bitcoin Well Make Money?
Bitcoin Well earns its revenue through the buy and sell spreads on its online portal, the spreads on Lite Account and ATM purchases, and the pricing on its Infinite service for big orders. The rates page states there are no withdrawal fees, account fees or hidden fees, so the spread is the business model.
Being publicly traded means you can actually see how Bitcoin Well is performing financially. Its filings show revenue, costs and cash position, which is a level of visibility you do not get from a private exchange. I would still read them yourself before putting a large sum anywhere, and I would keep the coins in your own wallet either way.
How Do You Buy Bitcoin On Bitcoin Well?
There are three ways to buy bitcoin on Bitcoin Well: online through the portal with Interac e-Transfer, with a Cash Voucher on a Lite Account, or with cash at a Bitcoin Well ATM. In all cases, bitcoin is sent directly to your own wallet. The exchange never holds your coins.
Online Portal (Verified Account)
- Log in to your verified account and click Buy.
- Enter the CAD amount or the bitcoin amount you want. The platform shows the exchange rate including the spread before you commit.
- Choose Interac e-Transfer, which is the funding method on the rates page for verified accounts.
- Send the payment. Once it arrives, bitcoin is dispatched to the wallet address you registered, on-chain or over the Lightning Network.
You can also set up a recurring Interac e-Transfer from your bank. The buy page says that every time the transfer arrives, Bitcoin Well automatically sends bitcoin to your personal wallet. That is the cleanest set-and-forget option I know of from a non-custodial Canadian platform for anyone dollar-cost averaging into bitcoin.

Cash Vouchers (Lite Account)
- Create a Lite Account with an email address and a bitcoin wallet address.
- Buy a Cash Voucher with cash.
- Redeem the voucher against your Lite Account for bitcoin delivered to your wallet.
The Lite Account pays a 4.0% spread to buy and sell. The site gives two different daily buy limits (CAD 4,950 and CAD 3,000 on different pages), so read the limit shown on your account before you plan a larger purchase.
Bitcoin ATMs (Cash, In Person)
Bitcoin Well lists 160+ locations across Canada where you can buy bitcoin with cash. Use the ATM locator on the Bitcoin Well website to find the nearest machine. The fee is shown at the machine before you commit, and ATM pricing is separate from the online spreads, so expect to pay more than you would with Interac. It suits Canadians who prefer cash transactions or who want a physical machine nearby, and the bitcoin is sent straight to your wallet.
For the biggest orders, Bitcoin Well Infinite is a premium service for purchases of $50,000 or more. Pricing for it is not on the public rates page, so ask for a quote before you move that kind of money.
I dropped a few features that older versions of this review described, including Cash Balances, gift cards, payroll direct deposit, wire transfer and Visa debit funding. I could not find them on the official Bitcoin Well pages in October 2026, so I do not list them here.
Oleg's takeMy Bitcoin Well purchases went exactly as their website describes, fee included, and the bitcoin arrived in my wallet within 10 minutes.
How Do You Sign Up And Verify Your Account On Bitcoin Well?
There are two account types. A Lite Account needs an email address and a bitcoin wallet, and it is the route for voucher purchases at the higher 4.0% spread. A verified account completes identity checks, which for a Canadian MSB means government-issued photo ID and the details FINTRAC requires, and it unlocks the Interac portal at 1.5% and 2.0%. You must reside in Canada, in a province or territory where Bitcoin Well Canada operates. You also need a destination wallet address before a purchase can complete.
Lite Account
The Lite Account is for Canadians who want a simple start without sending identity documents up front. You provide an email address and a bitcoin wallet address, buy a Cash Voucher with cash, and redeem it for bitcoin. The official pages describe a daily limit and a per-transaction limit that do not match across pages, and the spread is 4.0%. Treat it as a small-purchase option, not a cheap one.
Verified Account
Expect to provide the following:
- An email address and password
- Your name, address and date of birth
- Government-issued photo ID, such as a driver's licence or passport
- The other details FINTRAC requires of a Canadian money services business
- A bitcoin wallet address to receive purchases
The wallet address requirement is the step that surprises new users. You cannot complete a purchase without a destination bitcoin wallet. If you do not already have one, see our guide to the best crypto wallets for Canadians. Hardware options like Trezor and Tangem are worth considering for larger amounts.
A verified account unlocks the Interac e-Transfer portal at the 1.5% buy and 2.0% sell spreads.
What Features Does Bitcoin Well Offer Canadians?
In 2026 Bitcoin Well offers non-custodial online Bitcoin buying and selling, 160+ Canadian ATMs, Cash Vouchers on a Lite Account, Lightning Network delivery, recurring Interac buys, bill payments to Canadian payees and the Bitcoin Well Infinite service for large orders.
Lightning Network
Bitcoin Well delivers bitcoin either on-chain or via the Lightning Network. Lightning delivers bitcoin in seconds rather than waiting for on-chain confirmation times. For Canadians who use Bitcoin for everyday payments or who want near-instant settlement, the Lightning option makes Bitcoin Well genuinely practical for active use rather than just holding.
Bill Payments
You can pay Canadian bills with bitcoin from your own wallet. The official page says to add any Canadian payee to your Bitcoin Well account, and Bitcoin Well generates a permanent bitcoin address for that payee. When you send bitcoin to that address, on-chain or over Lightning, the platform converts it to Canadian dollars and pays the bill. The payee receives dollars; you spend bitcoin. There is no pre-funding step, and the bitcoin stays in your wallet until the moment you pay. The pages describe support for credit cards, utilities, taxes and phone bills.

This is Bitcoin Well's most distinctive feature for Canadians who want to use bitcoin in their everyday financial life without going back through the banking system by hand. Because the sale happens at the market rate when your payment lands, remember that bitcoin transactions are final and the price can move.
Recurring Buys
The recurring option runs through your bank. Set up a recurring Interac e-Transfer, and each time the transfer arrives Bitcoin Well sends bitcoin to your wallet automatically. For Canadians who want to accumulate steadily without thinking about it, this is the simplest route. I could not confirm a daily schedule on the official pages, so the cadence is whatever your bank's recurring transfer allows.
Bitcoin Well Infinite
Bitcoin Well Infinite is a premium service for purchases and transfers of $50,000 or more, and it has its own website linked from the main Bitcoin Well site. If you are moving that much into bitcoin, it is worth a conversation. Pricing is not published on the rates page, so ask for a quote before you commit and compare it against a dedicated broker from our OTC crypto brokers guide.
160+ Bitcoin ATMs Across Canada
Bitcoin Well says you can buy bitcoin at 160+ locations across Canada using cash. Older versions of this review cited 280 machines, a figure that no longer matches the official site. Use the ATM locator on the Bitcoin Well website to find the nearest one. The ATM option is useful for Canadians who prefer cash, and the bitcoin goes straight to your wallet rather than sitting on the machine operator's books.
How Does Bitcoin Well Compare To Other Canadian Bitcoin Options?
Bitcoin Well sits between Bull Bitcoin, the other major non-custodial Bitcoin-only platform in Canada, and custodial exchanges like Shakepay and NDAX. Its unique advantages are the ATM network, the Lite Account for small purchases, the public company structure and the Infinite service for large orders. Its fees are higher than custodial exchanges for active traders.
| Exchange | Score | Custody | Cost Model | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Coinbase | 9.8 | Custodial | Spread plus a fee that varies by payment method | Beginners |
| Kraken | 9.2 | Custodial | Pro 0.40% / 0.80% at the base tier | Altcoins under Canadian rules |
| Bull Bitcoin | 8.0 | Non-custodial | Spread, about 2.0% each side | Self-custody Bitcoin buyers |
| Newton | 7.9 | Custodial | 1.00% to 1.15% on BTC | Low-cost altcoin buyers |
| Bitcoin Well | 6.4 | Non-custodial | 1.5% buy / 2.0% sell spread | ATM and cash buyers |
| NDAX | 7.8 | Custodial | 0.20% flat | Cost-focused traders |
Bitcoin Well and Bull Bitcoin are the two serious non-custodial, Bitcoin-only options in Canada. On our measurement Bitcoin Well's 1.5% buy spread is lower than Bull Bitcoin's spread, but Bull Bitcoin has no fee on Interac, wire or bill payment funding and Bitcoin Well has the ATM network.
What Are The Biggest Complaints About Bitcoin Well?
The most common friction points are the wait for on-chain delivery, the requirement to have a wallet address before purchasing, and the cost of cash purchases. Beyond that, the complaints come down to what Bitcoin Well deliberately is not.
- Bitcoin only. No Ethereum, no altcoins and no staking.
- Spreads. 1.5% to buy and 2.0% to sell is steep next to NDAX, and the Lite Account's 4.0% is steeper still.
- Conflicting limits. The Cash Voucher daily limit is stated two ways on its own site.
- Sell side costs more. Because the sell spread is 2.0%, round trips are expensive.
On-Chain Bitcoin Delivery Is Not Instant
For users accustomed to instant everything, waiting for on-chain confirmation can be frustrating. Lightning delivery is near-instant. Read the payment confirmation details carefully before sending funds so you know what timeline to expect for your specific transaction.
Wallet Address Required Before Purchasing
You cannot complete a Bitcoin Well purchase without a destination wallet address. This is the most common friction point for new users who arrive expecting to buy Bitcoin as simply as buying something on Amazon. The non-custodial model is Bitcoin Well's biggest advantage for security, but it does require one extra step upfront. See our crypto wallet guide if you need to set one up before purchasing.
ATM And Voucher Fees Are Higher Than Online
The Lite Account's 4.0% spread is well above the 1.5% online portal spread, and ATM purchases are priced separately again. Users who prefer in-person cash transactions will pay more than users who deposit via Interac. That is standard for ATM Bitcoin services. The premium is the cost of convenience and access without a bank transfer.
Scam Awareness
Bitcoin ATMs have unfortunately become a common tool in fraud schemes. Scammers direct victims to deposit cash at a Bitcoin ATM to "pay a fine," "verify an account," or "secure their funds." No legitimate operator will ever ask you to deposit cash because someone called or emailed you. If anyone instructs you to use a Bitcoin ATM to make a payment to resolve a problem, it is a scam without exception. See our guide on common crypto scams in Canada for what to watch for. The Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre publishes warnings about Bitcoin ATM fraud.
Does Bitcoin Well Restrict Or Freeze Accounts?
Bitcoin Well does not commonly freeze accounts, but like any FINTRAC-registered money services business, it can place holds on transactions if suspicious activity is detected. Common triggers include unusually large or frequent transactions, deposits from accounts not in the registered user's name, or activity inconsistent with your stated financial profile.
Because Bitcoin Well is non-custodial, an account freeze primarily affects your ability to buy more bitcoin through the platform rather than blocking access to bitcoin you already own. Bitcoin in your own wallet is yours regardless of what happens to your Bitcoin Well account. This is a meaningful difference from custodial exchanges where a freeze can lock your existing holdings. For Canadians, it reinforces the value of taking self-custody from the moment of purchase rather than leaving bitcoin on an exchange.
Can Bitcoin Well Track Where You Send And Receive Bitcoin?
Yes. All on-chain bitcoin transactions are permanently recorded on the public Bitcoin blockchain. Bitcoin Well can see the time, amount, sending wallet and receiving wallet for every transaction involving your account. Because verified-account KYC links your identity to your wallet address, Bitcoin Well can associate blockchain activity with your account. Lite Account transactions are linked to your email address instead.
Under FINTRAC rules, a single transaction of $10,000 CAD or more in virtual currency must be reported to FINTRAC. This applies to all regulated Canadian crypto businesses, not just Bitcoin Well. If you are transacting above this threshold, the report is filed regardless of your preferences. It is a standard Canadian compliance requirement, not a Bitcoin Well policy.
How Is Bitcoin Well's Customer Support?
The Bitcoin Well contact page lists email at hello@bitcoinwell.com, an online Help Center, and weekday hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Mountain Time. I could not find a phone or text line listed there in October 2026, although older versions of this review described one, so check the contact page before you count on it.
In my testing of Canadian exchanges since 2016, support is where a lot of platforms fall down, and an Edmonton-based team on Mountain Time business hours is something to plan around. If you buy in the evening or on a weekend and something goes wrong, expect to wait until the next business day.
Who Should Use Bitcoin Well And Who Shouldn't?
Bitcoin Well Is A Good Fit If You
- Want to buy bitcoin with cash at an ATM across Canada without a bank transfer
- Want to own your bitcoin in your own wallet from the moment you purchase, without exchange custody risk
- Are dollar-cost averaging into bitcoin and want recurring Interac buys going straight to your wallet
- Want to pay Canadian bills with bitcoin from your own wallet
- Are looking at a $50,000+ bitcoin purchase and want to talk to Bitcoin Well Infinite
- Value dealing with a publicly traded Canadian company whose financials are publicly disclosed
Bitcoin Well Is Not The Right Choice If You
- Want altcoins beyond Bitcoin. Try Newton (59 CAD pairs listed), NDAX (77 base assets on its public API) or Kraken (about 498 tickers available to Canadians on our count)
- Are an active trader focused on minimizing fees per trade. At 1.5% to 2.0%, Bitcoin Well is not competitive with NDAX (0.20% flat) for frequent trading
- Are a first-time Bitcoin buyer who is not yet comfortable with self-custody wallets. Start with Shakepay and move to self-custody once you are ready
- Want the lowest-spread non-custodial option online. On our 2026-10-01 measurement Bull Bitcoin sits at roughly 2.0% each side of mid-price, so run the numbers before you assume either one is cheaper for your order size
Bitcoin Well suits Canadians who prefer cash, who want a physical machine nearby, or who want recurring Interac buys delivered straight to their own wallet. If you want the lowest fee for frequent trading, NDAX wins on cost. If you want altcoins, look at Kraken. For a first purchase on a single custodial platform, start on Coinbase.
What Changed For Bitcoin Well In October 2026?
- The official rates page lists 1.5% buy and 2.0% sell spreads for verified accounts, and 4.0% for Lite Accounts.
- The buy page lists 160+ ATM locations and delivery on-chain or over Lightning.
- The CSA's list of authorized platforms was last updated. Bitcoin Well is not on it.

Is Bitcoin Well Worth It For Canadians?
Bitcoin Well has grown into more than an ATM operator. It now offers Lightning delivery, recurring Interac buys, bill payments to Canadian payees and the Infinite service for large orders, all while sending your bitcoin straight to your own wallet.
Two things stand out as genuinely unusual in the Canadian market. First, the ATM network: being able to walk into a Canadian location, pay cash and receive bitcoin in your personal wallet is a real alternative to bank-based exchanges. Second, the public company structure: Bitcoin Well's financial results are publicly disclosed and scrutinized, and that transparency is worth something.
My recommendation: if you want to buy bitcoin with cash and ATM access, if you need a conversation about a large order, or you want a non-custodial platform from a publicly accountable Canadian company, Bitcoin Well is a solid choice. If you want the lowest fee for active trading, NDAX wins on cost. For many Canadians the right answer is using Bitcoin Well for cash purchases and a lower-fee platform for larger or more frequent ones. Not sure which? Take the exchange quiz or ask in r/OCryptoCanada.

Yes. Bitcoin can be delivered on-chain or over the Lightning Network.
Does Bitcoin Well Sell Ethereum Or Other Coins?
Is Bitcoin Well Cheaper Than Bull Bitcoin?
On the buy side, yes on our measurement: 1.5% against about 2.0% each side at Bull Bitcoin on 2026-10-01. Bull Bitcoin charges no fee for Interac, wire or bill-payment funding, and Bitcoin Well has the ATM network.

Yes. Bitcoin Well Inc. is listed on the TSX Venture Exchange under the ticker BTCW, and the listing date on the official site is July 30, 2021. As a public company it files financial results that anyone can read, which is transparency most private crypto companies do not offer.
Does Bitcoin Well Have An OTC Desk?
Bitcoin Well Infinite is a premium service for purchases and transfers of $50,000 or more. Pricing is not published on the rates page, so ask for a quote before you commit and compare it with other Canadian OTC options.
Can Bitcoin Well Pay My Bills With Bitcoin?
Yes. You add a Canadian payee to your account and Bitcoin Well generates a permanent bitcoin address for it. Send bitcoin to that address, on-chain or over Lightning, and the platform converts it to Canadian dollars and pays the bill. The official page describes support for credit cards, utilities, taxes and phone bills.
Does Bitcoin Well Freeze Accounts?
Like any FINTRAC-registered money services business, Bitcoin Well can place holds on transactions if it detects suspicious activity. Because it is non-custodial, a hold mainly affects your ability to buy more through the platform. Bitcoin already in your own wallet stays yours.
Can Bitcoin Well See Where I Send My Bitcoin?
Yes. On-chain transactions are public on the Bitcoin blockchain, and verified-account KYC links your identity to the wallet address you use. Single virtual currency transactions of $10,000 CAD or more are reported to FINTRAC by all regulated Canadian platforms.
How Do I Contact Bitcoin Well Support?
The contact page lists email at hello@bitcoinwell.com, an online Help Center and weekday hours of 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Mountain Time. I could not find a phone or text line listed there in October 2026.
Do I Need A Wallet Before Buying On Bitcoin Well?
Yes. Bitcoin Well sends bitcoin straight to a wallet address you provide, so you need one before a purchase can complete. See our guide to the best crypto wallets for Canadians if you have not set one up.
Is Bitcoin Well Better For Cash Buyers Or Online Buyers?
It depends on what you value. Online buyers on a verified account pay a 1.5% buy spread, which is far cheaper than the 4.0% Lite Account spread used for Cash Vouchers. ATM prices are shown at the machine, so compare that number with the portal rate before you commit. Cash and ATM buyers pay for convenience and for not needing a bank transfer.
Does Bitcoin Well Have A Mobile App?
I could not confirm a standalone mobile app on the official pages in October 2026, and no app store ratings are on file for it. Plan on using the web portal.
