Bitkey is a Bitcoin-only, seedless 2-of-3 multisig wallet from Block; the Ledger Flex is a multi-coin seed-phrase wallet with Canadian stockists. The honest difference: Bitkey removes the seed phrase and adds inheritance, but it only holds Bitcoin.

Bitkey Vs Ledger: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, the Ledger Flex is the better pick because it scores 9.2 against 7.3 on my list. My #1 wallet pick overall is the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10).

What Happens If You Lose Your Bitkey Or Ledger Flex?

Bitkey: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: no seed phrase: 2-of-3 multisig (hardware key, phone app key with encrypted cloud backup, server key in an AWS Nitro Enclave); Recovery Contacts and integrated inheritance. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 1 security issue is on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-01 (Relationship-enrollment bug).

Ledger Flex: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase; Ledger Recovery Key (NFC) now included with the Flex; optional paid Ledger Recover (Coincover), availability depends on country of ID document. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 7 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-27 (Security Bulletins 023, 024, 025: signing-review bypasses).

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

Which Is More Secure, Bitkey Or Ledger?

They answer a different question. Ledger's Flex protects one seed phrase inside an EAL6+ secure element. Bitkey, made by Block, throws out the seed phrase entirely and uses 2-of-3 multisig: a hardware key on the device, a phone app key with an encrypted cloud backup, and a server key held in an AWS Nitro Enclave. Any two of the three can sign. Lose the Bitkey and your phone plus server key still move your coins; get a phished phone and the thief still needs a second key.

The price of that design is dependency. Bitkey needs its app, a phone with NFC and Block's server key to function as designed, and Bitkey is Bitcoin only. Whether its code is open source is not stated on the pages I checked, while Ledger is also not fully open. Neither is a clean win.

Incidents on each side. Bitkey disclosed a relationship-enrollment bug on August 1, 2026: Block says an outside actor could not take control of the wallet or move funds, there was no evidence of exploitation, and it patched the app and recommended re-enrolling inheritance beneficiaries for a small cohort of second-generation users (Bitkey's post). Ledger's list is longer: the 2020 customer data leak, the 2023 Recover controversy, the December 2023 Connect Kit attack on dApp users, and signing-review bulletins 023 to 025 on August 27, 2026. A Ledger wallet "getting hacked" in the sense of a seed being pulled off a Flex is not in that record.

Which Is Easier To Use?

For a non-technical person, Bitkey. There are no twenty-four words to hide in a sock drawer. The new Bitkey has an OLED touchscreen and a fingerprint sensor, in a Corian body, and the battery lasts up to a year per charge. You tap it to your phone over NFC in the Bitkey app on iOS 15.2+ or Android 7.0+. It also has Recovery Contacts and integrated inheritance, which Ledger does not.

The Flex is the better tool if you hold more than Bitcoin. Its Ledger Wallet app runs on iOS, Android and desktop, it uses Bluetooth, NFC and USB-C, and a 24-word phrase with an included Ledger Recovery Key (NFC) is the backup. You get a 2.8 inch E Ink screen. Optional Ledger Recover is a paid service whose availability depends on the country of your ID document.

Which Supports More Coins?

Not close. Bitkey is Bitcoin only. Ledger Flex supports 500+ coins in its app, including Ethereum, Solana, XRP and stablecoins, with thousands more via third-party wallets. If you hold anything but Bitcoin, the answer is Ledger, or use my Trezor and Tangem split for ETH, SOL and XRP.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

Prices are close. The new Bitkey is CA$360 on a Canadian-located fetch, the first-generation Bitkey CA$220, still listed. The Flex is CA$369 on Ledger's Canadian storefront (USD 249). Ledger has Canadian resellers (Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada, Amazon Canada); Bitkey's page shows CAD pricing but I did not find shipping terms or duties. Under CBSA rules, a courier parcel from outside the US and Mexico is duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, so check at checkout.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

Bitkey is a Bitcoin address, so it pairs well with Canadian Bitcoin sellers. Bull Bitcoin pays out on-chain with no fee (minimum 0.001 BTC, about an hour), or by Lightning or Liquid, straight to your own wallet. Bitcoin Well also delivers to your own wallet with no withdrawal fees. For Ledger, Coinbase has a "Sending to myself" checkbox, and Wealthsimple allows external withdrawals after a selfie check. FINTRAC's travel rule (June 1, 2021) adds details at CAD 1,000 or more. CRA: moving coins between wallets you own is not a disposition.

Which Should You Choose?

Pick Bitkey if you hold Bitcoin only, want no seed phrase and want inheritance planning built in. Pick the Ledger Flex if you hold other coins, want a conventional seed backup and Canadian stockists. See my Bitkey and Ledger Flex, and best crypto wallets in Canada. Ledger Flex is number 3 in my top 7; Bitkey sits outside it.

One more practical point. If you pick Bitkey, buy it for the multisig and inheritance features, not because you want a general-purpose vault: the day you want to hold Ethereum or Solana, you will need a second device. If you pick the Flex, write the 24 words down carefully and store them offline, because that phrase is the whole wallet.

  • Block publishes a 'Meet the new Bitkey' post.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Better Than Ledger?

For Bitcoin only with no seed phrase, Bitkey is a different and arguably simpler design. For multi-coin, the Trezor Safe 7 and Tangem sit above the Ledger Flex in my top 7.

Is Bitkey A Good Wallet?

It is a Bitcoin-only 2-of-3 multisig wallet from Block with inheritance built in, CA$360 for the new model. It relies on the app, your phone and a server key. An August 2026 enrollment bug was patched with no evidence of exploitation.

What Is The Most Trusted Cold Wallet?

No wallet is a guarantee. I weigh open code, audits and how a maker handles incidents. My top 7 starts with the Trezor Safe 7, Tangem and the Ledger Flex.

Can A Ledger Wallet Get Hacked?

The incidents on record are a 2020 data leak, a 2023 dApp library attack and 2026 signing-review bulletins, with no Ledger device seed shown stolen. Never type your 24 words anywhere, and buy from Ledger or an authorised reseller.

Does Bitkey Ship To Canada?

The Buy button shows a Canadian dollar price when fetched from Canada, but I did not find shipping or duty terms on the pages I checked.

Which Is Cheaper, The Bitkey Or The Ledger Flex?

Bitkey: CA$360 for the new Bitkey; first-generation Bitkey CA$220. Ledger Flex: USD 249 and CA$369 on the Canadian storefront; free shipping, usually ships within 24 hours.

Do The Bitkey And The Ledger Flex Ship To Canada?

Bitkey: yes by implication: the Buy button shows a CA$ price when fetched from Canada; shipping terms not on fetched page. Ledger Flex: yes: Canadian storefront shows CA$ pricing; authorised Canadian resellers: Canada Computers, Best Buy Canada, Amazon Canada (Triniti Tech also appears on the reseller page).
