Bitkey and Tangem both skip the 24-word seed phrase, but in opposite ways. Bitkey is a Bitcoin-only, 2-of-3 multisig wallet from Block that costs CA$360. Tangem is a set of NFC cards that back each other up and hold 14,100+ assets for about USD 55. If you only own Bitcoin and want inheritance tools, Bitkey. If you hold more than Bitcoin, Tangem.

Bitkey Vs Tangem: Which Is Better For Canadians?

For most Canadians, the Tangem Wallet is the better pick because it scores 9.4 against 7.3 on my list. My #1 wallet pick overall is the Trezor Safe 7 (9.6/10).

What Happens If You Lose Your Bitkey Or Tangem Wallet?

Bitkey: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: no seed phrase: 2-of-3 multisig (hardware key, phone app key with encrypted cloud backup, server key in an AWS Nitro Enclave); Recovery Contacts and integrated inheritance. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 1 security issue is on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-08-01 (Relationship-enrollment bug).

Tangem Wallet: Your coins are recorded on the blockchain, not stored inside the device. Recovery depends on the backup: Seedless by design: extra cards back each other up (2 or 3 card sets); a 12-word seed is optional for advanced users. Keep that backup offline and never type it into a website or app. 2 security issues are on record for the maker, the latest on 2026-07-09 (Ledger Donjon laser attack on Tangem cards).

CBSA courier thresholds: shipments from outside the US and Mexico are duty and tax free only up to CAD 20, and from the US or Mexico up to CAD 40, so expect taxes on any hardware wallet. Buy from the maker or an authorised reseller only.

Which Is More Secure, Bitkey Or Tangem?

Different bets. Bitkey splits control three ways: a hardware key generated and stored offline, a phone app key with an encrypted cloud backup and a server key held in an AWS Nitro Enclave. Two of the three must sign. That means a single stolen part cannot move your coins, but it also means you trust Block's server for one third of the setup. There is no seed phrase to steal or lose. Bitkey's chip is not named on the pages I fetched and its open-source status was not stated.

Tangem puts the keys in an EAL6+ chip on each card (IP69K), made with Samsung per Tangem, and uses extra cards as backups. Its app is open source, and the card firmware is not stated as open source. Audits: Riscure (December 2023) and Cure53 (March 2026). Is Tangem really secure? Honestly, with known caveats. In July 2026 Ledger's Donjon team showed a laser pulse on the card's secure element could set the card's access code to its own value. It needs physical possession and about USD 250,000 of lab gear, but cards have no firmware update path, so it cannot be patched (Donjon). Tangem also fixed a December 2024 bug that logged a private key for users who activated with a seed phrase and then contacted support from the app (Tangem). For Bitkey, an August 2026 enrolment bug for recovery contacts and beneficiaries was reported, and Block says an outsider could not take control or move funds (Bitkey).

Which Is Easier To Use?

Both run from a phone with NFC. Bitkey's new model has an OLED touchscreen, a fingerprint sensor and a Corian body, and battery life up to a year per charge; the first generation has no screen. Its app runs on iOS 15.2+ and Android 7.0+. Tangem has no screen at all: tap the card, enter an access code or use biometrics in the app. I use a Tangem card myself alongside a Trezor for ETH, SOL and XRP.

Which Supports More Coins?

Bitkey is Bitcoin only, full stop. Tangem lists 14,100+ assets across 90+ networks. If you ask which Bitcoin wallet is the best for your situation, the answer starts with whether you will ever hold something else. For multisig specifically, Bitkey is a built-in 2-of-3 and Tangem is not a multisig wallet.

Tangem is a fraction of the cost, and Bitkey is the one that shows you a Canadian price outright. Tangem's own banner also shows an extra discount to October 25 using its own code, but my code is the one I stand behind. Read my Tangem review for the details.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?

For Bitcoin, Bull Bitcoin and Bitcoin Well send coins straight to your own wallet, and both fit a Bitkey well. Wealthsimple Crypto allows external wallet withdrawals after a selfie ID check, and Coinbase and Kraken ask the Travel Rule questions above CAD 1,000. Moving between wallets you own is not a disposition for the CRA. See Bull Bitcoin.

On backups, the two ask different things of you. With Bitkey you protect a phone, its encrypted cloud backup and a hardware key, and you can name Recovery Contacts. With Tangem you protect physical cards: a 2-card set means one can be stored away from home, and a 3-card set gives more slack. A 12-word seed is optional on Tangem for advanced users. Whichever you pick, rehearse the recovery with a small balance before moving serious money, and never store every backup piece in one place.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Bitkey if you hold only Bitcoin, want no seed phrase with a multisig safety net and care about built-in inheritance through Recovery Contacts. Choose Tangem if you hold several coins, want the lowest price and are fine with a card that cannot be patched. What if you lose your Bitkey? The 2-of-3 design is built so the phone and server keys can still take part in recovery, but follow Bitkey's own recovery guide before you rely on it. Compare Tangem further in Tangem Vs Ledger.

What Has Happened With Bitkey And Tangem?

  • Bitkey disclosed the relationship-enrolment bug, with no evidence of exploitation (Bitkey).
  • Ledger Donjon published the laser attack on Tangem cards (Donjon).
  • Bitkey announced the new Bitkey with a touchscreen and fingerprint sensor (Bitkey blog index).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bitkey A Good Wallet?

For Bitcoin-only holders who want no seed phrase and a 2-of-3 multisig, yes. It costs more than Tangem, is Bitcoin only and relies on a Block-run server key for one of the three keys.

Which Bitcoin Wallet Is The Best?

It depends on the person. For one device that handles Bitcoin and more, my number one is the Trezor Safe 7. For Bitcoin-only without a seed phrase, Bitkey is a legitimate option.

Is Tangem Really Secure?

It has an EAL6+ chip and two audits, but a July 2026 laser attack by Ledger Donjon showed the card's access code can be reset with physical possession and about USD 250,000 of equipment. The cards cannot be patched.

Which Bitcoin Multisig Wallet Is The Best?

Bitkey is a built-in 2-of-3. For classic multisig you can mix devices such as the Trezor Safe 7 with other signers. I do not name a single best.

Do Bitkey And Tangem Ship To Canada?

Tangem lists Canada at 4-11 business days. Bitkey shows a CA$ price from Canada but does not state shipping terms on the page I read.

Which Is Cheaper, The Bitkey Or The Tangem Wallet?

Bitkey: CA$360 for the new Bitkey; first-generation Bitkey CA$220. Tangem Wallet: 2-card set USD 54.90; 3-card set USD 69.90; Family Pack USD 129.80; Ring and 2 cards USD 160; Pro Kit USD 180 (prices shown in USD to a US visitor).

Do The Bitkey And The Tangem Wallet Ship To Canada?

Bitkey: yes by implication: the Buy button shows a CA$ price when fetched from Canada; shipping terms not on fetched page. Tangem Wallet: yes: Canada listed with Standard delivery 4-11 business days, USD 16.00 shipping; free standard shipping on orders over USD 100 (VAT excluded).
