Which Is More Secure, Tangem Or BitBox?

Tangem is a seedless NFC card and the BitBox02 is a Swiss-made open-source device that backs up to a microSD card. They are almost opposite philosophies. Tangem hides the seed away and uses extra cards as backups. BitBox gives you a screen, sliders and the option to write down 24 words. I focus on the BitBox02 and note that it comes as the original (USD 168) and the newer Nova (USD 197), each in a Multi or a Bitcoin-only edition.

The BitBox02's firmware is fully open source and independently audited. The Nova has an EAL6+ certified dual-chip design, and the original pairs an ATECC608B chip with an ATSAMD51J20A microcontroller. Tangem's chip is EAL6+ and its app is open source, but the card firmware is not stated as open. Neither is perfect in 2026.

Tangem's main item is Ledger Donjon's July 2026 laser attack, which sets a card's access password to the attacker's own value. It affects all cards, needs possession and about $250,000 of lab gear, and cards cannot be patched (Donjon). Tangem has Riscure (2023) and Cure53 (2026) audits and also had a 2024 app logging bug that affected under 0.1% of users.

BitBox's own record has two 2026 items. On August 17, 2026 its Dixence update disclosed two severe firmware flaws found in internal audits (memory corruption on Multi-edition devices before wallet setup, and a silent-payments flaw that could lock funds to an unintended address), plus a worse impact for a bootloader flaw first fixed in July. They need a malicious host or app, nobody reported theft, the Bitcoin-only edition does not contain the memory flaw, and firmware 9.26.5 fixes them (BitBox post). On September 10, 2026 attackers abused BitBox's Brevo newsletter account to send two phishing campaigns and download the subscriber list; shop orders, apps and devices were not touched (BitBox notice).

Which Is Easier To Use?

Tangem is easier: tap, approve, done, with no cable or battery. The BitBox02 has a 128 x 64 OLED with capacitive touch sliders and needs the BitBoxApp on Windows, macOS, Linux or Android, with iPhone and iPad support on the Nova via Bluetooth. Tangem has no screen, so BitBox is the one that shows you the transaction on the device. If you are a beginner who wants a fast mobile flow, Tangem wins. If you want a device with its own display, BitBox wins.

Which Supports More Coins?

Tangem says 14,100+ assets across 90+ networks, and it has no Bitcoin-only mode. The BitBox02 Multi edition supports Bitcoin, Litecoin, Cardano, Ethereum, Chainlink, BAT and 1,500+ ERC20 tokens, and the Bitcoin-only edition does Bitcoin only. Tangem is far broader, so if you hold Solana or XRP, I would not choose the BitBox on the coin list I could source.

Which Costs Less In Canada?

The 2-card Tangem set at USD 54.90 is the cheapest way in, and my code OCRYPTOCANADA takes 10% off. BitBox's shop shows USD, CHF, EUR, GBP and BTC, so work out the CAD cost yourself, and I could not confirm Canadian shipping on its pages.

How Do They Work With Canadian Exchanges?
